[FI] Turku City Council votes yes to a tram

The approved line will be 12km long, with 20 stops. Estimated cost is €465m - out of interest, how does this compare with (for example) the estimated costs for a tram in Leeds?

HS2 Reset: Evidence to Transport Committee - 9 July 2025 "Total overspend on high-speed rail could be as much as 100%"

It just completely beggars belief that it will be at least 10 years until the first train runs, when the bulk of the civils are done. Ok I get that laying track, overhead wires and signals takes time but 10 years? Really? How long would this take in any other country?

Realistic outlook for new lines in London

The network hole is because no-one lives in Richmond Park or on Wimbledon Common! The part to Roehampton possibly makes sense (Roehampton is one of the most densely populated parts of London that has no tube/rail services) although I am not convinced that the District Line needs relieving in...

Delays and wrong line running, Nuneaton this evening (14-5-26)

More delays tonight, line side fire near Tamworth. Southbound have been diverted via Bescot and lots running 90 mins late. Looks to be open again now.

Avanti shop closures when approaching Preston

They don't record the seat number against the transaction so how would they know? What if the ticket had been bought by a different person to the traveller, is the ticket purchaser liable? I don't think so. They just take the risk.

Why are some coach letters skipped on trains with lettered coaches ?

Was it for compatibility during the switchover from the loco-hauled MK3 sets? If I remember rightly, a lot of those had 6 x Standard Open carriages (A-F), then 1 x Buffet First and either 2 or 3 First Opens. None of the Pendolinos had 6 standard class cars when first introduced.

    Times article on WCML timetable/capacity

I meant on the WCML which is what he is referring to. I can't see how he thinks there are hundreds of trains fewer running on the WCML than in 2019. Although I guess one fewer per day is hundreds fewer in a whole year!

    Times article on WCML timetable/capacity

Ah sorry, didn't realise about the pay wall. Not sure I am allowed to cut and paste the text from the article. The gist of it is around "ghost slots", in particular slots for coal and mail trains that no longer run but still have slots reserved in the timetable due to them being as for...

    Times article on WCML timetable/capacity

I saw this article in the Times today, which implies that there is spare capacity on the WCML which should be used for more services (the author seems to be supporting open access applications)...

    Club Avanti not updating

I think it is exactly that - something to do with not being scanned. I had an advance single from Glasgow to London which wasn't scanned, it is still not showing. I'm expecting it to appear at the end of the 28 day period .

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

I think the new timetable 24 years ago was the first complete rewrite since 1967

Sadiq Khan says future of Heathrow Express should be ‘reconsidered’ due to Elizabeth line success

That might be technically true but Heathrow as an entity is heavily regulated and subject to lots of controls that limit what they can do with infrastructure that they own. I imagine that one of the conditions of approving the third runway will be a stipulation that they must facilitate a far...

SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

They basically need to (as a minimum) revert to the pre-2020 suburban off peak pattern. On the Wimbledon side this means putting the Earlsfield stops back into the Shepperton services and restoring 2 per hour on the Guildford via Epsom and Dorking services. I don't know whether the peak extras...

Grand Central apply for Newcastle - Brighton direct

Still only 10 per day northbound with gaps in the hourly pattern at 0745, 1345 and 1645. Last service at 1845. What was the last one when it was the full hourly service pre-Covid? And only 9 per day southbound.

ECML major disruption | 91107 fails at Knebworth (25/04)

Looks like all the morning trains from Leeds have made it now, albeit with a good few delays. A relief for the thousands of football fans heading for Wembley. Also looks like the WCR special from Leeds to Wembley Central arrived almost on time. Interesting routing for that one - down the ECML...

Major disruption through Retford (16/04/2026) and residual effects over following days

Yes made it ok in the end, only 120 mins down ... That was my pub time with friends lost. Anyway coming home on 1A33 which is 20 down and losing more time stuck behind GC 1A69 which seems to be losing time for no obvious reason

Major disruption through Retford (16/04/2026) and residual effects over following days

And to be fair to LNER, the staff on this service have been excellent. Relayed pretty much all the info that I could glean from this thread, RTT , etc. Distributed water and crisps. Kept a special eye out for the unaccompanied kid sitting near me.

Major disruption through Retford (16/04/2026) and residual effects over following days

It's 35 mins walk to Elland Road. Seems like half the train will be doing the same thing! (Football)

Major disruption through Retford (16/04/2026) and residual effects over following days

1E01 now moved into Newark station. But still not moving northbound. Something seriously wrong with contingency procedures here. There is absolutely no reason why northbound shouldn't now be cleared and everything back moving.

Major disruption through Retford (16/04/2026) and residual effects over following days

Seems that nothing at all is moving past the affected train. Just the one service went through wrong line, nothing in either direction since then. I'm sure all the industry experts will explain how difficult it is to sort this sort of thing out but to an outsider this is being incredibly badly...
