Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

I say again, these features are primary factors in the fatalities and injuries sustained. Not in the cause of the accident. Taken as a whole, the events immediately after the collision with the land slip would’ve been different without these glaring HST weakpoints.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

I’d argue the sacrificial cab, ineffective lifesavers and coaches that lift off their bogies unchecked as primary factors contributing to the fatalities and injuries sustained.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

And the rear section of the lead power car completely crumpled when the coach rode up on it! The main body of the power car, housing theclean air compartment and engine, didn’t suffer any significant impact it seems.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

Exactly. Why is there not more emphasis on this design failure. The image of the loco Bulkhead and floor with no cab is unsettling.

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

It’s staggering that the coaches aren’t retained to the bogies in the vertical direction. This is a big factor in the post impact dynamics. Are the coaches just resting on some form of lug or locating pin then?

Carmont (near Stonehaven) derailment - 12 August 2020

The entire GRP cab detached from the bulkhead and was destroyed so any safety equipment fitted to it would be carried away with it. ScotRail Industrial Relations issues (including conductor strike action)

Short, short memories. Do not forget a guard travelling PASS was instrumental in expediting the emergency service response at Carmont. Guards are absolutely vital. Running an ‘easy’ DOO service is asking for trouble. Is safety an afterthought now that we’re all experts in Covid?
