    Bit off topic then really...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

There are loads of junk yards around Derby to hide stuff :-)

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

I love it that SWR have only just realised this!! SWT realised it when they ran them many years ago and fell over themselves to get rid. Whatever twit decided to reintroduce this heritage stock deserves all they get. If they actually get any running by the big May timetable change, make sure...

Class 442s - Now at the end of the road and to be withdrawn permanently

This is the most sensible thread in this post. Well done the penny has finally dropped......

Grand Central Class 180 Interior Refresh

The latest one or two have Alstom ETCS kit fitted as well, so the early refurbs will have have to go back for this to be fitted sometime.

    Debating the definition of 'narrow'.......really?

    SWR Repaints and Refurbishments

Seats that provide a reasonable level of comfort. First are going to get rid of all these at god knows what cost to the taxpayer and provide ironing boards with the the legroom reduced to midget size. An improvement apparently.

    SWR Repaints and Refurbishments

You don't honestly think the new franchise would be clever enough to spot that do you?

    SWR Repaints and Refurbishments

Gosh that's rare these days! Ever since new franchise started the WOE service has gone to pieces, short formations and terminating at Basingstoke is a daily occurrence now.

    Class 158 Step One

I used to work on these and don't think recall them doing it to that extent. There can be a slight difference due to the system hysteresis sometimes caused by the relay valve balance, but this should not be relied upon to provide an increased brake force

    Class 158 Step One

Indeed, tread brakes are a whole different story due to the variable friction at different speeds

    Class 158 Step One

Ah good old Scotrail....did they fit all the brake pads? :)

    Class 158 Step One

Ops sorry, I only quoted your exact words...I thought the train pipe provided brake control pressure but will bow to your superior knowledge. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to the 'blue star' braking system you are referring to please?

Rail Traction (or similar) courses available / useful?

I tend to agree. NTAR is 50% sponsored by Siemens so it is all about them, rather biased I am afraid

    Class 158 Step One

Interesting question; The three-step braking system is designed for simplicity and reliability. The braking on each vehicle is applied consistently throughout the train and the brake pad friction is almost even at all speeds. The three steps provide a low-medium-high selection of brake force...

    Class 158 Step One

Just for the record HST's have a digitally-controlled two-pipe brake control system, so there are plenty of '....air pipes to faff around with' !

TPE Class 397 ('Nova 2') construction and updates

Thanks, I think that is the point I was trying to make. Dragging a 25Kv cable exposed on the roof looks like an afterthought rather then good design.

    GA Class 317 problem ?

Inspection of Traction Motor Covers, but not sure why. Possibly risk of detachment I would guess.
