Does it really spend more than two hours running to Barnetby and back just to run round? Seems crazy but the station loops are very short and Holmes don't appear to be signalled to allow it. If it is longer than the station loops, the train will need to be split to use the sidings anyway.

Agreed re. 90s - but 86501 was actually regeared, and often worked trains on its own that were otherwise allocated to pairs of standard 86s.

That was fixed during the 2012 resignalling.

The headshunt was relaid and reopened to its full length last year, following some quite extensive work to stabilize the embankment. It's already been used by at least one railtour. Only moves the problem along though - now the length of the bay platform is a constraint.

There is still no such ban. I visited the SVR a couple of years ago and they were running 'turn-up-and-go' steam footplate rides to the Bridgenorth limit of shunt on a light engine between trains.
