SWR Longest Strike - December 2019

For what’s meant to be an all-out month long strike there’s a heck of a lot of trains running on SWR and that’s a fact.

Were phones ever installed on BR trains?

I’m sure they sold them in the buffets on the 442s at one stage.

    Future preservation of modern trains

With regard to Alankos third paragraph. I remember the write up in Rail Enthusiast Feb 1982 on the Deltic farewells where the writer said firmly “I can’t believe that people will become similarly misty-eyed and emotional when the last HST pulls out of the Cross in 2000”. A sentiment echoed in...

    Permit To Travel machines

I haven’t seen the one at Beaulieu Road say anything apart from “out of service” since early 2016. This is what it says these days.

    Virgin Weekend First price increase

NSE soon after it came into existence used to do 1st class upgrades for a quid for Network Card Holders on weekdays after 10! Very fond memories of countless midweek trips to the smoke sitting pretty in a compartment of a 442.

Were there ever bournemouth -gatwick- victoria through trains?

Used the bay platform at Bournemouth. The last one out on a Saturday evening at 2150 was a regular trip back from football matches in the late eighties / early nineties. Nice brisk rattling run, hardly ever more than a handful on it out of Bournemouth.

SWR: Guards/RMT Industrial Action. Next strike dates: 30/31 August, 1/2 September 2019

A quick q for purely selfish reasons. What’s the next earliest date that there could theoretically be strikes announced for. In particular could there be strikes called for the 23rd and 30th March? Having previously had no alternative but to travel on one of the “strike Saturdays”, it’s not...

Flying Scotsman to visit Swanage Railway - 22nd March to 10th April

Yes it’s only £55 extra for the breakfast pastries. Hope you get one each way :-) For that kind of dosh I’d be looking for smoked salmon bagels topped with caviar, a glass of Champage, followed by a full English and a Bloody Mary;-)

    SWR Major Disruption 19/11

Ain’t that the case.8-) You do feel that SWT would have attempted to run some form of service certainly south from Guildford rather than just throwing up their corporate arms. I’m afraid the R in SWR increasingly seems to stand for Rubbish.

    Famous rail enthusiasts?

Re the OP, I remember an issue of the Railway Magazine circa 1976, which had an article on all of Lt Pigeon, including Mum, being huge Western fans with a piccie of them all at Swindon recording them. Funny what you remember. May 1976, I recognised the cover.

SWR: Guards/RMT Industrial Action. Next strike dates: 30/31 August, 1/2 September 2019

Apologies if this has been asked earlier in the mega-thread but when do the strike timetables come out for the Saturdays. I've been fortunate it's not affected me so far but it may well in a few weeks time. Ironically, it seems I could do my intended journey cheaper and almost literally door...
