The only issue, I suppose, would be whether Transport for Greater Manchester have any intellectual property rights in the old GMPTE livery- although I rather liked it and somewhere still have the Hornby model with Bidston and Wrexham destination blinds (as per prototype).
It's only since I started using the train again at the end of December that I realised just how much something needed doing to that area between the pedestrian crossing outside the Queens and the main station entrance. Surprising that somebody hasn't been pushed in front of a bus or a taxi...
Quite possibly, although most of those who boarded at Halifax looked like teenagers/students going out for the night and presumably getting the last bus home. I suppose it's equally possible that some of them used Metro's journey planner and saw that it was still running.
Travelling from Kings Cross to Bradford on Grand Central this evening, I was struck by the number of people who still came out for the GC train even though there was no return journey. About half a dozen at Wakefield, a couple at Mirfield and a good 20-30 at Halifax.
Far from it, I'd say- some galas will have service trains terminating there and it becomes a badge of honour for some to make the largest possible loco stop!
Just an observation from over the last few weeks, but the 1714 Leeds-KX also seems to produce an HST about half the time (I take the 1703 Leeds-Ilkley so I see it most nights!).
It allows Alan Bennett to commute between his homes!
Seriously, I think that the Skipton area is now quite an attractive prospect for high end commuting into Leeds and Bradford as it allows you to live on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park but still be able to get to London...
Just a couple of thoughts:
1) As far as I can see, the 1611 Skipton is formed of a unit which has been stabled in the platform at Bradford all day. The unit to form the 1630 Leeds is due in from Skipton at 1610/1611 so the 1611 Skipton must have been loaded and ready to go when this happened...
If Shipley-Bradford FS is over-served then so is Keighley-Skipton, which currently sees at least 18 carriages per hour most of the time on weekdays. Keighley to Bradford does seem to be a steady market, though, and justifies a 10-minute frequency on Transdev's 662.
Part of the reason why the...
At that time in the evening there tend to be three or four sets destined for the Harrogate line on the blocks at Leeds- two 144s went out on the 1713 as far as I could see. There used to be a 2x142 service which was used to swap units around between Neville Hill and Heaton- the single unit...
Bingley- dead straight, tunnel at one end and overbridge at the other, lots of Midland Railway buildings still in place and a canal on the far side and EMUs excepted, most services formed of 142/4/153/158s or 66-hauled freight.
Knaresborough is another one- tunnel, overbridge, station, tunnel-...
About 30 years ago, one of the railway magazines printed a similar challenge as a Christmas puzzle - it was called the Bishop's Dilemma or something similar, and concerned a bishop who was commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury to preach at every Anglican cathedral in Britain, travelling...
I think the move to Paytrain operation and then back again is definitely responsible in part.
I grew up on Merseyside and in the 1980s Hamilton Square, Birkenhead Central, Southport and the Liverpool city centre stations had ticket collectors- anywhere else was pot luck as to whether your...
I've seen Heaton Lodge Junction advertised as a stop on a Saturday morning Leeds-Huddersfield stopper before now.
An interesting variant has been happening with the recorded announcements at Shipley over the last few weeks - occasionally you hear the announcement "This is a platform alteration...
If I remember rightly, a premium was applied to fares routed via the ECML after electrification- it certainly used to be the case that a return from Leeds to Glasgow (which assumed travel via York and Edinburgh) was noticeably more expensive than Shipley to Glasgow, based on the S&C.
I think...
Sexhow, followed by Potto
Barnsley Court House
Northampton definitely sounded much better when it had a Castle on the end.
Bootle Oriel Road (only realised recently that there's a set of streets in Bootle named after Oxford colleges)
