    HS2 Station Designs Revealed

Nope - but you're not alone in thinking that. It does seem to me that it's one area where hs2 could be massively improved - either have a new classic station adjacent to Curzon Street to allow interchange, or allow hs2 trains to run through somehow... But then that would cost a lot more money...

    HS2 Station Designs Revealed

They both look good to me - quite different, but both good (from the pictures at least) My thoughts too. Plus, even if you did make it a nice light space with a higher ceiling than new street, if you ever want to rebuild bits of the station for whatever reason it's a lot harder if there's...

What do you think the potential new HS2 station at Manchester Airport should be called?

Might make both Northern Powerhouse rail and HS2 work a lot better if it didn't get built and they could enter Manchester on a more direct route... Anyway, my guess is: 'Barclays Northern Powerhouse M56 Airport Parkway Interchange'

    HS2 and Liverpool

Warrington does have particularly bad traffic (probably at least partly because of the way the road network funnels so much traffic into Bridgefoot (the gyratory over the river)) and I'm sure that this impacts on Bank Quay's catchment area. However, there are currently plans to build a new...

Glasgow Subway trains first in UK to run with no staff on board

By being the first proper passenger railway in the UK to (hopefully) implement unattended operation.

Glasgow Subway trains first in UK to run with no staff on board

I think it's great that over 100 years since it started running the subway is still innovating :). With reference to the early issues Dubai had, I understand the plan is for the trains to have a driver on board for the first year or so, until any initial problems have been ironed out. I don't...

Edinburgh to Newcastle: could an alternative route be used to increase capacity?

So is that going to be ETCS level 2 then? I agree with Senex that it's often very unclear what 'Digital Railway' actually is, because so much (ticketing, information, signalling...) seems to be included in its scope. Especially when almost all the systems it appears that 'Digital Railway' is...

Why no private companies building their own tube lines?

Probably because it's incredibly expensive to build new underground lines, and they generally wouldn't make a profit unless large numbers of passengers could be persuaded to pay extremely high fares (unless a large government subsidy was organised). I wonder if London is really the only place...

Should there be a new terminal in Liverpool?

Just to drop this here, the 20 miles more campaign group considered a few options for hs2 stations in report they produced, including expanding Lime Street and reopening Exchange. May be of interest: http://www.20milesmore.com/report/ Personally I think Lime Street makes most sense as part of...

Bombardier and Hitachi joint bid for HS2 rolling stock contract

I did find that 'spitfire' thing a bit odd I have to say... Are they trying to find echos of ww2 in brexit?! Or maybe it's a hint that the train will be a bi-mode with an internal combustion engine? Funny how we've got a 'bullet train' IEP, and may have a 'spitfire' high speed train...

    Windowless driver cabs?

Unfortunately I think it would be a rather complex system to design... I fully expect driverless cars within 10 years, but wouldn't bet any money on when we'll have a working safety critical car to car communication system... Issues include what to do if a car drops out, increased security...

    South Wales 'Metro' updates

That looks really interesting! Haven't seen that before - is there any more information about the system anywhere? Am guessing they must use supercapacitors rather than batteries if it only needs 3 minutes to charge, or will people just have to get used to slower bus journeys waiting for 3...

What improvements would you make if the railways were built today?

Integrate the different routes better, with a mind to making interchanges, and passing through cities easier. For example station pairs like Bradford Forster Square and Bradford interchange, or Warrington Bank Quay and Warrington Central, would not exist - they would be replaced with a single...

Transpennine Express Timetable May 2018 (Leeds - Manchester)

I'm glad it's not just me that's a bit disappointed about the decision to take the transpennine express services away from Warrington. I'm by no means a daily commuter, but I do travel to York from Warrington semi-regularly, and this will add around 20 minutes and the faff of a change to a...

Rising electrification costs caused by increased overhead electrification clearances

Yes I was under the impression that this was an issue with the TSI rather than a Network Rail standard as well... Maybe one thing within their control is they could investigate whether it's possible to make the risk assessments required in order to get a derogation from the new requirement...

Ideas for future High Speed Railway lines

I like that idea too - the GWML already provides a reasonably fast journey from Cardiff and Bristol to London (even more so if they get 140mph running eventually), but they're still a bit cut off from Birmingham and the North. My crayon drawings put a nice new tunnel between Cardiff and Bristol...

Place name differences: the railway calls it by this name, but everyone else calls it by that name!

Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith (North Lakes) are obviously just Oxenholme and Penrith... At least Penrith has the decency to put it in brackets though!

HS4Air – “An M25 for high speed trains”

Don't understand how this made the news to be honest, as it just seems like a small (I'm assuming) engineering consultancy trying to generate publicity with some pie in the sky thinking that has no chance of ever getting built, with no real detail to the proposal at all (at least that I can see...

Cambrian line 20 Oct 2017: loss of ERTMS speed restrictions. RAIB report released

If it is the case that the equipment supplier had not considered this failure mode (assuming it actually was a software failure), that would be rather worrying, and would raise all sorts of questions about the quality of safety analysis they performed on what is maybe the most safety critical...

Transport for the North Strategic Transport Plan

I was wondering if that's what they had in mind actually - looking at the (admittedly crude) diagram in the report it appears that that's the sort of alignment they might be going for. It would make sense as although still not really any good for serving the centre of Warrington itself (sadly...
