    GWR Class 800

There is a photo posted on another forum taken from a passing train showing the end bogies of 800 001 and 800 002 (where the two units are joined together) apparently derailed on points within the depot. Also today's runs between Reading and Wantage Road/Swindon - which used these units...

    GWR Class 800

A series of IEP runs between Reading and Wantage Road/Swindon are scheduled for Tues 25th to Thurs 27th this week.

Yes, the footbridge is probably OK and widening the line to 3 or 4 track between Challow and Swindon should be feasible if enough ££ were thrown at it. Between Challow and Baulking would be quite straightforward, though Baulking overbridge would need replacing and - depending on how much...

You're welcome. To add to what others have posted - most of the masts along the line appear to be overheight in order to provide brackets for supporting the -25kV ATF wire. In the picture the short mast nearest the camera will carry an anchor boom which is used for terminating a set of wire...

Photo attached I took this morning from the adjacent road bridge. There is plenty of room for a third track under the footbridge but a fourth might be a bit of a squeeze. It's worth pointing out that there used to be a third track here in the form of an up loop at Uffington which ended just...

    GWR Class 800

Reported elsewhere that they were running on AC between Tilehurst and Didcot and vv whilst other traffic running. Apparently this was to test for any further electrical interference issues. According to RTT, the 800s did two return runs from Reading to Swindon and then returned to North Pole...

I think that Tw99 means the Westbury lines curve from the station to Reading West. I don't think that the curve from the Scours Lane/Tilehurst direction to Reading West (West Curve) has been wired yet.

I think they are raising the parapets on the bridges for safety reasons. I believe that they have already lowered (or, if not intend to) lower the tracks under the two bridges at Bourton to provide clearance for the OLE. Both bridges are grade 2 listed I think.

800 004 and companion 800 003 (thanks ajay 1071) worked 5X81 from North Pole IEP Depot to Swansea Maliphant CS this morning via Bristol Parkway. Thanks to a heads up from a friend who saw it at Reading, I was able to video it at Baulking Grange/Hale Farm between Challow and Uffington...

They have been doing this intermittently for some while now on the GWML too with overnight runs between Reading and Wantage Road. This involves switching from from diesel to AC at Tilehurst and back again at Didcot. As Coppercapped says, it's in the specification.

It was at an IET meeting in Swindon last October and it was me that asked the question about the B4017 bridge at Steventon. The NR project manager described this as the electrification engineer's "worst nightmare" and that they most likely planned to replace the bridge but would probably have to...

Some good views from a drone in this Crossrail/NR video of Maidenhead https://youtu.be/sQ2zG1WfeIE It shows the tracklaying work west of Maidenhead station for the Crossrail turnback siding and stabling sidings. Also shows the electrification work to good effect.

I do too, but I'm not holding out too much hope. When the A417 bridge was replaced at Challow I was speaking to one of the NR project managers who told me that the bridge replacement budget was so tight that they had only allowed for replacement on a like-for-like basis and there was no money to...

Pretty much. Main steelwork is up all the way from Stocks Lane/Causeway Crossings through to Uffington and most of this has the Small Part Steelwork (SPS) in place too. There is a gap between Stocks Lane and just west of the A34 bridge which is only piled. In addition to my previous post a...

Some more information for 'jyte'. West of Milton Junction there are now three short sections wired:- - from 400m west of Causeway Crossing, Steventon for about 1km towards Wantage Road. Both up and down lines are wired. - from 1km west of Wantage Road (Grove) to due south of Denchworth (just...

Assuming that 'leomartin125' is (currently) employed by GWR, then I would gently suggest that he reads that company's Social Media Policy for employees and then thinks carefully about what he posts. My long experience in management (not in the railways) tells me that this could possibly not be...

16th October is the date that has been quoted to me by an internal source. Initially two HST diagrams on the Padd-Bristol/S Wales route will be replaced by four 800s running as 2x2 units. That I understand is the current plan and is subject to the usual caveats as plans can change.

The short answer is no - and you're spot on in terms of potential impact. It has all the hallmarks of a complete shambles. This shouldn't be impossible to sort out but the terms dithering and incompetence come to mind :-x http://www.steventon.info/Railway.html I wouldn't take Steventon Parish...

You're welcome. Scratch what I said about wiring at Challow. Just been down for a look. There's just the earth return wire in place, no catenary.

What a great piece of work. After lurking for a while I've registered to try and help out with this. I live near the GWML on a section that is currently being wired and travel up to London fairly regularly. If I can add to what has been done so far: Starting at Maidenhead, the wires extend...
