While I agree that there is a bit of a farmyard smell around some of these claims, I can't see there being any consequences for the train crews used back then or the member of this site. I could claim I was in a pacer 20 years ago doing 100mph - it is of course utter b*llox but nobody really cares.
In the UK, there is an emergency door release. If activated by a passenger while the train is moving, this initiates an automatic emergency brake application, (and traction interlock prevents traction being taken if the train is stationary) but the door itself will not unlock and open until the...
As jonmorris0844 states - using the emergency door release is not the same as "forcing" a door open. There is an important distinction there. You can't have it so anyone can pull the lever and automatically apply the brakes in the middle of the channel tunnel.
You are all making the incorrect assumption that opening a door initiates a braking application. In this case it does not. The driver is made aware of the situation but no automatic system intervenes.

That is a requirement of GMRT2473 which...
Because you can't do this in a diesel:

EDIT: typical poor journalism though: "supercharged locomotives".... really? Where are they contributing forced induction on an electric train?
HS1 has 1 in 40 in several places.
In terms of light rail - there is a crazy incline on the DLR as you exit the Bank tunnel and head into daylight towards Shadwell - anyone know the gradient of that?
Another tragic loss to motor racing.
I've followed IndyCar since 1992 and seen some horrific crashes; on TV and at the tracks. It always leaves a sick feeling when it happens. Krosnoff at Toronto in '96 and Moore at Fontana in '99 stick in my mind. Watching that last night I got the same...
It seems I'm quite tolerant based on some of these little rants. However I think this may be because in a previous part of my life I had a role that taught me a vital part of life that has benefitted me ever since: Patience. It is hard to overstate how much easier I find life (even outside the...
140mph between Newcastle and Edinburgh? Really?
I thought it was just a trial between Peterborough and Grantham with the flashing green aspect that signified 140.
Anyway - that doesn't answer your question...
As you will recall the carriages have only doors at one end of them unlike a mk3 or 4. They made up for these poor dwell times with massively superior acceleration compared to HSTs or 91 hauled trains though.
The main curve (for the WCML) is (as you are travelling south) to the west. The ECML route is a junction to the east. The junction actually diverges in the middle of the curve which is canted to allow for trains at 110mph. Therefore if you are a train heading south you are canted over to the...

You can sort of see when the first train crosses the junction it looks somewhat awkward as it leans the "wrong" way.
To be pedantic, I am indeed extracting the urine, but am far from jealous!
