The previous poster is correct, it was a black jacket three quarter length, lined with a "blanket" material, called a "reefer" jacket or "P" jacket and definitely did not have "leather" on any part of it.
EWS decided to start "storing" and withdrawing class 58 locos in 2001 and a lot were put into store at various locations(mainly Toton) as afr as I know they were never allocated to Eastleigh and were all gone by 2002.
There were very few drivers outside the LM region that signed class 58 traction, only Didcot men on the Western region and Barrow Hill drivers on the Eastern region. On the LM only Saltley, Toton,Coalville,Burton,Leicester and Bescot men as far as I recall were trained on the class.
58's were powerful locos but with low gearing for freight work but once they got going they could really fly especially on passenger stock as there was very little weight involved compared to a 1800 tonne coal train.Funnily enough their main problem was that they "slipped" a lot at low speeds.On...
As far as I know the 58's were always allocated to Toton TMD apart from when driver training on the class was required then they were allocated to which ever depot required one, at Saltley we had 58024. Incidentally we used class 58's on the Longbridge to Swindon car part trains just before...
Talking of "station pilots" at Birmingham New (in steam days) there were two pilots, one on the the ex LNWR side of the station usually a "small" tank loco, and one on the ex Midland side which was normally a Stanier class 5 or some other "large" loco, the reason for this was that West bound...
Some of the last duties performed by class 25's in the West Midlands were at Saltley they were used as "Bank" engines, assisting heavy trains from Landor Street Junction to either Bordesley Junction or Camp Hill.
I can't remember the exact date but I relieved a "special" at Gloucester on a Sunday in the 1960's to work back to B'Ham New St. the train arrived with a class 25 and load of ten coaches (330 tons trailing)and I was advised that there wouldn't be a banker at Bromsgrove for the Lickey bank.I...
25's were a useful workhorse although very noisy in the cab, they rode roughly at speed and you felt every rail joint, howver they didn't "bounce" like a 31.The 31's always seemed a "weak" loco compared to a 25, but the 31's were far heavier in weight.Out of all the early diesels we worked on at...
in the mid 1960's right up to their scrapping most of the local trippers worked by Saltley were usually class 25's,we also worked passenger trains with 25's mainly the B'ham to Norwich trains if a 31 wasn't available, we also worked parcel and newspaper trains with them.A regular Saltley turn...
As 8E16 started at Bescot Yard the loco would come off Bescot HS,and as 7E13 didn't route via Bescot but via Gloucester, Bromsgrove and Landor Street no loco change would be required.:)
I doubt if class 20's ever worked this train it would normally be a class 45 or 46 and of course at times a class 47, and I did work this train on several occasions.
8E16 ran from Severn Tunnel to Tinsley via Gloucester, Landor Street,Derby and Treeton. it was worked by Saltley men from Gloucester to Landor street and a fresh Saltley crew from Landor Street to Tinsley.Hope this helps.
Burton Station had four platforms a main island platform (as now) with an inset bay at the North end on the "down" side and a bay at the South end which was in the centre of the Island platform having two platform faces(similar to Platform 5 at Derby). The north bay was used for the "Tutbury...
