IIRC it will go up to 2 return services a day, although it isn't exactly ground breaking stuff.
By the way how many coaches were not platformed, I may be wrong but I think Sunderland Station can fit a 7 car HST.
I know they have been keen to re-open the line, I'm not sure what's changed to pay for the work, maybe they have a big new contract of some sort to export/import cargo?
I'd like to see some xc calling at Sunderland, either by extending some Newcastle terminaters or the odd service going up the Durham Coast. Although I do acknowledge its unlikely ever to happen unless the line speed on the Durham Coast line is increased.
What about Hartlepool and the like ie Grand Central, up the line speed on the Durham Coast line and you may have a viable diversionary route, indeed the Leamside Line wouldn't be needed at all, and at a stroke enable the T&W Metro be extended into washing Washington along the old Leamside Line.
Disagree with point 4, even taking into account of the slower Durham Coast Line, it can take up to 40 minutes to travel from Newcastle to Sunderland on the Metro (if your very lucky you can get the hourly Northern rail service which takes @ 20 minutes), then there is up to 20 minutes connection...
My view is that the Metro should never have used the Durham Coast Line between Sunderland and Newcastle, it should have instead used either an new line altogether or used an existing track bed, but maybe this should be dicussed in it's own tread not this one.
As far as I know it was only Sunderland that lost the Transpennine service and this ran via Newcastle, a Transpennine Service never ran down the Durham Coast as far I know, however there was a debate about running some Transpennine/Crosscountry sevices via the Durham Coast, but i've never heard...
That's not what was implied in the Sunderland Echo http://www.sunderlandecho.com/news/business/latest-news/sunderland-to-get-fifth-daily-train-service-to-london-1-5008848 ,mind they get things wrong fairly regularly.
I see that Grand Central are to operate a fifth return service from Sunderland to London Kings Cross. The DFT were against it but the ORR gave it the go ahead to start in the 2nd week of December this year. Good news if you ask me.
How has Grand Central been doing recently on both routes? There seems to be less chat about them lately. Has being owned by Arriva made any difference to day to day operations or ambitions for the future?
