CPOs and the potential to make a profit on them

Maybe they “don’t care” because it’s a low population area by design. Slough with its hundreds of thousands of people, they are more important simply by count. If you want to consider coal plants and their higher radioactive output, there was a lot to be critical of. The compensation part is a...

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

The frequency and reliability upgrades on the most popular route, to London, may even outweigh the reopenings. Rebuilding Reading and moving some trains downstairs in Paddingon did affect more people in a minor way, while reopening Okehampton affects fewer people in a major way. Can non-local...

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

If reasons to exclude projects come into it, then no surprise that nothing is lauded. I would like to see more said about the Borders success. That may well be a better example than the Northumberland line (more work to do), Okehampton (Interchange station on its way). However, celebrate what...

CPOs and the potential to make a profit on them

The business case was for private development on land bought in the market. The Treasury only became involved in this off railway site, passively and after the fact, by the levy in my previous comment. Getting involved earlier and demolishing homes people didn’t want to sell is a larger step...

CPOs and the potential to make a profit on them

Those schemes have various ways private money reached funding public projects. The most relevant one is Crossrail's Community Infrastructure Levy. I'm curious how that could be used by rural local government in your Steventon example. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/community-infrastructure-levy The...

The overall rule has been around for a while. One change of direction on the straight, none in braking.

DLR Thamesmead extension - the logical conclusion

By having a different public culture. Norway has built a lot of tunnels, many that we would never consider financially viable for lack of people benefitting and some that enough people wouldn't want to use for personal feelings of safety. They've built cheaper tunnels by skimping on safety...

DLR Thamesmead extension - the logical conclusion

They’d want it clear of the public to work as an emergency tunnel. It’s 700m shore to shore, likely twice that for a tunnel for cyclists on DLR type descents. This is off putting to many. Even the proposed DLR/bus/pedestrian bridge in this area wasn’t going to be popular with pedestrians.

Toilets (or lack of them) on some modern trains. What lessons should be learned?

Radar keys are sold cheaply on Amazon. I strongly encourage anyone remotely at unease to buy a pack and see what difference access to these toilets has on their worry.

Toilets (or lack of them) on some modern trains. What lessons should be learned?

https://dbesg.deutschebahn.com/esg/news/press_releases/press-release-cleartrak-safe-toilet-system-8930980 A 2020 article that doesn’t really say much: it makes clean-ish water from the toilet and compacts the solids...

Should the London Underground have first class?

At the moment you saw it, it wasn’t paying its way. For that reason I’d be suggesting Hong Kong removes theirs, not that anywhere copies them.

    Formula 1

The final corner has a section with a brand new surface. It is now beginning to break up, with loose tarmac on the road like we might experience ourselves. Those rocks have stuck to the hot tyres of two cars, causing them to immediately crash, both causing safety cars. The second was followed by...

What does 6 and 3 stub platforms at Euston mean for hs2?

That goes to what was said before about an office with a station versus a station with an office. What’s making it unworkable seems to be a wish that a better plan exists, regardless of the costs of trying to discover it. Do we know any of the flaws of the previous efforts? The one I know is...

What does 6 and 3 stub platforms at Euston mean for hs2?

Has that been discussed on the forum before? It doesn’t sound chaotic to me because it’s one of the fundamentals that has stuck around. Where does that prediction come from? If there isn’t room for 9 platforms and ground floor lifts for the development above, what was supposed to happen for 10...

Moving Britain, by Design - GBR visual identity proposal.

The diagonal change of colour across the door seems like it would break some visual accessibility rules. Margins/padding on “the grid” feels off, the red background of the rail symbol (why is there one on that sign?) touches the border but the customer lounge icon doesn’t. The Pictography also...

Avanti (West Coast Intercity) after being brought back into public ownership

They’re trying to make a good impression with GBR. If there was a cut to be made, it would have been well before the rebranding. Equally, if there was genuine need for a new service that satisfied Treasury, it would have been brought in, rather than wait for next December.

HS2 Reset: Evidence to Transport Committee - 9 July 2025 "Total overspend on high-speed rail could be as much as 100%"

Metro, long distance, rules of physics. Pick two. You have chosen the first two, HS2 picks the latter two.

Proposal: Mildmay eastward extension from Stratford to Barking Riverside (and beyond?)

That’s the empty land once destined for a Vegas like sphere. Hallmark own it, formerly Madison Square Gardens. They paid £40m, so add at least that to the costs. What length is platform 11, it seems very short. Angel Lane will need a long closure. Is this flyover over all four lines, so that...

    Fantasy: If you could re-design HS2 ...

That appears to be a major part of the push. I haven’t yet spotted an advocate for the M1 route say it should be non stop London to Birmingham. At one point the New North Main Line route (OOC to South Ruislip) was going to be used at surface level. It was considered easier, cheaper, for a...

Euro 2028: Manchester - Liverpool Corridor

Can they run longer trains that only stop at key stations, even if they aren’t faster? That works for Chiltern when the WCML is closed.
