Could Addiscombe and Sanderstead be reached from the down bay? The track layout isn’t quite clear enough to tell, in this photo.
Given the flow of London commuter traffic, an Up bay would be most useful in the morning peak, and a Down bay in the evening.
I’m not sure how they wangled out of it. It’s possible the officially sanctioned resolution is to encourage the affected passengers to board the train from the Down platform at Harbour - which has slope access - travel to Seaford, and return on the same unit, which (because of the single line...
Another unfortunate Newhaven Harbour oddity is that step-free access to the Up platform was removed, a few years ago, when the level crossing adjacent to the station in the Seaford direction was closed.
I remember being surprised that it was legally permissible to remove existing step-free...
There are plans for a big (tall) housing development next to Harbour station, which would transform the area, but - predictably - it has encountered political opposition.
The old station building adjacent to the down platform, now in an advanced state of disrepair, used to house Newhaven Model...
If ever the Mid Hants re-consider a commuter service, feeding into GBR at Alton, they now have a suitable piece of rolling stock. Surely an excited Go-op have already picked up the phone?
1. Tax gambling winnings as income. If you get £50k from employment, or £50k in dividends/rental income, it's taxed. The same should apply to a £50k win on the horses, at the casino or on the National Lottery.
2. Stick a £1 tax on each home delivery of hot food. These renegade Apps are causing...
I believe the use of 313s to Walton/Clacton covered two, short, discontinuous periods. Something like 82-83 then returning in 87-89. During the latter period, one of them demolished the station building at Walton.
This is the sort of minor irritation - charges between TOCs for dispatch, creating inflexibility - that should disappear immediately when GTR are taken into public ownership, and we have an integrated railway.
Sorting these relatively trivial frictions, quickly, should be how we judge the early...
If there’s demand for these audio files, they could be sold to enthusiasts to make a bit of extra cash for the railway.
Albeit I expect, once a price tag was attached, interest would wane…
Not building a new station at the Wingletye Lane overbridge was a missed opportunity, with hindsight. The nearby school with a local catchment (Dury Falls) was transformed into the sixth form college with students from across east London, by 1991, and this would be giving a basic station a good...
With c2c fares from Southend to London traditionally being lower than those of Greater Anglia from Southend Victoria, there was/is a long-standing reluctance to let c2c customers use GA services during engineering work, or at times of disruption.
It will be interesting to see what happens on...
I expect, in some cases (I don’t say all, or even most), these are boys or young men on the autistic spectrum who - through lack of boundary setting - have been led to believe that their diagnosis can excuse poor behaviour, which won’t have consequences.
The stampede towards the bus door...
Are the miscreants generally bus enthusiasts (so called), or local troublemakers who’ve heard there’s something unusual going on, for free, and ‘crash’ the event to cause distress?
Young people tend to vote against the establishment, and the establishment is currently the Labour party, with the Tories still carrying a strong whiff.
Most 16-17 year-olds won't vote, but of those that do, I reckon c.35% will vote Green, or Corbynite/independent. Approximately 25%...
It will be interesting to see the stopping pattern of these services - specifically, whether they get Plumpton, Cooksbridge, Glynde and Berwick calls. As noted up thread, the old 18:23 to Eastbourne was all shacks after Haywards Heath, which made it a slow grind and hit performance. On the other...
Ah yes, the 18:23 London Bridge - Eastbourne worked by 442s, which was 10-20 minutes late into Lewes almost every evening. Thankfully, they’ve gone!
17:03 is indeed a bit early for the down run, though many office workers can now flex their hours around preferred trains, and will be merrily...
I hope, when services are halved for these understandable reasons, those that remain in the timetable are prioritised as 'must run without fail'. These would not be suitable moments to find you're short of a driver/guard, or have a troublesome unit on the diagram.
The last time a steam charter train visited Seaford, in 2014, occupation of the single line from Newhaven required cancellation of one of the half-hourly branch passenger trains, no doubt inconveniencing a couple of dozen people. Never again??
