    Gatelines - UK vs Europe

Many thanks to @Watershed for a comprehensive comment. For me the idea of more intrusive grates seems horrible. I my last visit to Edinburgh Waverley appalled me. What I remembered from the 1980 as a fine open station was disfugured by fences to enforce the barriered access to the platforms.

When is a direct train not a direct train?

When it uses a non-direct route?

    Dawlish-Teignmouth Overtaking

About 1987. Same time as the Newton Abbott remodelling.

    Dawlish-Teignmouth Overtaking

Not seen it happen there, but seen it on the BLS in Switzerland. One time at Brig I could see a very heavy freight train on the Lötschberg line (it had three Re 6/6 locos at the front and another 3 in middle) waiting someway up the hill on 'the wrong line' while 2 passenger trains overtook it.

2018 Barns Green crossing collision - RAIB report?

Thank you for that. I am not aware of hearing misadventure reported in the media in recent years. Socially I think there is more pressure to regard a death as someone's negligence for which they should be compensated. It defies belief that anyone would do anything so stupid, particularly...

2018 Barns Green crossing collision - RAIB report?

Inquests no longer seem to find death by misadventure. There seems to be a social tendency to lose the concept.

Report of collision Bedford (Elstow) - 19/06/26

Yes. And it will be RAIB's work cut out to see what underlying factors there were. It will be interesting to see if there was wrong side failure of the AWS.

    Enhanced Permissible Speed (EPS)

Given the restricted profile of the trains, is HOTF a problem? Also through Norton bridge there is scope for realining the tracks given the reduction from 4 to three since the Down Slow has been rerouted perhaps?

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

The The wiring at Newton Le W and Earlstown was installed as part of the Weaver to Glasgow electrification in the early 1970s. I think that twin track cantilever will be a more recent modification.

Woman injured after telegraph pole falls on her (Pontyclun station)

I often wonder if the great british public think that the OHLE masts are telegraph poles.

Somewhat Ugly Signal Gantries, WCML Milton Keynes–Rugby and Stafford Crewe?

Am I incorrrect in believing that the boom could be unfolded to hinge the signal down to ground level for mainenance or repair?

Transpennine Route Upgrade and Electrification updates

I always wondered why Stalybridge was remodelled twice in so short a time. I didn't realise it was as long as 11 years.

There is so much that could be done to remove slow turnout speeds.

Report of Partial Bridge Collapse WCML 11/6

I could have sworn I remember travelling shortly after a track was removed. Maybe I never noticed the absence of the 4th track and made an assumption when the bidirectional facility was introduced.

Report of Partial Bridge Collapse WCML 11/6

I thought there were 4 tracks reduced to 3 by BR in the mid 1980s. When the Trent Valley 4-tracking was done 20 years later I believe the 4th was not reinstated there because an M42 bridge built meanwhile had insufficient clearance.

Report of Partial Bridge Collapse WCML 11/6

Surely it is possible to legislate to change that? I would envisage a structure separate from the bridge so that when it it would not require stopping or cautioning trains.

OHLE can be Pretty. Weaver to Glasgow and the French high speed lines did it very elegantly. I did wonder if if David Mylchreest. was another of Shant Grapps' aliases.

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

I remember the 6:53 off hartford when it was formed mainly of Mk3 stock (23m). 1780934947 An interesting thought when you consider how limited the parking used to be.
