Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

I agree Turbostars and IETs are pretty boring. I cant imagine them ever coming to heritage railways.

When do East Lancs or Keighley Worth Valley Railway run pacers?

I know the 144 defo runs on the autumn diesel gala this month.

    Antisocial behaviour on trains

Wow that is pretty shocking for a guy in his mid 50's! :o I would expect that kind of attitude from a disobedient child or a rebellious teenager, but not a middle aged man who should know better! I don't travel on the train very often (about once or twice a year on average) but have witnessed a...

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

Nostalgia probably. I feel nostalgic when I see/watch videos/ride on a pacer, esspecially a class 142, as they're the train I grew up riding on my local line (Colne - Blackpool South). Had many trips to Blackpool South with my parents on the pacer. About 2 hrs journey there and 2 hrs back. It's...

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

Oh right, that sounds a pretty good experience. The driving experience costs a lot more, over £100 I think!

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

Is that where you get to drive a pacer? That is awesome and something I definitely want to do one day.

When do East Lancs or Keighley Worth Valley Railway run pacers?

KWVR are running pacers tomorrow on their diesel rail car weekend as well as a tiny railbus from the 1950’s I think. There’s also a steam train and a 101 running too. https://kwvr.co.uk/events/rail-car-gala/

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

There’s no escaping the pacers! :lol:It’s pretty much railbus weekend at KWVR because as well as the 143 and 144 they also have a little dinky rail bus running in the morning! They are also running a steam service and a 101. I’m planning to go down there tomorrow! 1698532589 Can you imagine the...

    LSL announce Pacer railtour

On some of the reviews on TripAdvisor of the Wensleydale railway, some people described the pacer trains as having “square wheels” becuase of the bouncyness.

    LSL announce Pacer railtour

Cant ever remember being on a pacer that leaked or had it’s doors stuck. Guess I just got lucky? And what is a wheel flat?

    LSL announce Pacer railtour

Someone did a video of the tour here: It was fully booked, and yes, all of the 2+3 bench seating was occupied. The guard at one point actually asked people to remove their bags from the seats so people could sit down.

Controversial railway opinions (without a firm foundation in logic..)

Train drivers should accelerate faster and brake later when running late to make up time. I posted this in the “what happens if a driver is late” thread but it didn’t go down very well…

Should last trains of the day always have toilets

To be honest, I think all passenger trains with an end to end journey time of over an hour should be required to have toilets. And especially the last train of the night, when you've been out drinking with your mates you are often bursting for a wee on the way home… It should have been a part of...

What happens if a driver is late?

No, but why was the driver just sitting in the cab not going anywhere?! A good driver will at least try to make up time by whacking the throttle straight into full power when leaving stations and using full service braking when stopping at stations. Slightly less passenger comfort but does help...

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

The Telford Steam Railway is having a dmu weekend where they are running class 142 and 144 pacers as well as a 108. They are calling it the “multiple mayhem” event. Very fitting name.

    LSL announce Pacer railtour

They could put one on every weekend in summer to Blackpool, starting at, say Birmingham and picking up passengers at Wolverhampton, Stockport, Crewe, Wigan, Manchester etc. I bet it would be popular.

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

The pacers are very different to modern trains today. The experience on a 142 is very, very different compared to a 195 or a 333 for example. They feel very old fashioned compared to even a 158 despite the 158 only being built a few years later. Quite amazing really.

Pacers running on preserved railways - your thoughts?

Yes I agree. The pacers saved some branch lines from closing and may well now save some heritage lines from closing!

XC desperately needs more rolling stock

So just making the current overcrowding issues even worse.. Taking trains out of service when there is no replacement available... Makes so much sense! Well done Cross Country.

So.. What is going to be replacing XC HST’s when they go out of service?
