Rail Freight Flows and News UK

There seems to have been an increase in defence traffic - there were two trains into Longtown last week and one this morning (now en route to Kineton). There’s also a second diagram running too (Kineton-Marchwood this morning). Maybe not ‘good’ news… but good to see some extra traffic

How well used are the overnight TPE airport services?

Wednesday night is student sports night - I presume most of the customers were either wearing chinos/shirts/club ties, or elaborate fancy dress?

Also spotted there was a Masborough-Tees and return last week, and paths are now in for this on a more regular basis - is this just wagons going for repair or something more interesting?

There’s an STP in from Lindsey Refinery to Jarrow next Monday (9 March), flows out of Lindsey restarting?

Looks like the timber wagons previously used on the Baglan flow (which I thought was meant to be coming back) are being scrapped - unless there’s another use intended for them: LINK

Landmark deal paves way for return of regular cross-Channel rail freight

There’s a Network Rail video on LinkedIn which provides a few more bits of detail - including the aspiration for 3 trains a day from continental Europe to Barking, and for ‘a couple’ of connecting services each day from around the UK - Scottish Central Belt, South Yorks, North West and Midlands...

The Goole flow has already ended (last train was in December I think). Not sure about Barnby Dunn/Monk Bretton though.

    Leamside Line

Of course the Leamside line also runs directly past the Nissan factory in Washington - which has substantial freight potential (I believe some of the metals movements from South Wales to Middlesbrough are already associated with Nissan)

Why is Bradford so deeply overshadowed by Leeds in rail transport terms?

Although someone from Halifax does not live in Greater Leeds, whereas someone in Bolton or Rochdale does indeed live in Greater Manchester - so you can see why ‘Manchester’ may be a more effective regional shorthand on that side of the Pennines than ‘Leeds’ on the east side. This is a tangent...

Yes it’s a new flow - Freightliner put in a track access application for loads of slightly unusual new routes a few months ago but most were dropped; this was one of the few which they kept in. Proposed rights table here...

Steel rail - Is it not worth recycling?

Does 7 Steel in Cardiff not count as a major EAF plant?

I’ve read that the Baglan logs are due to return at some point - unsure if this is true or not.

Couple of interesting DB route learners ran this week, Masborough-Tees and Doncaster-Rossington - anyone got ideas on either of these?

I get your point - but also anything extra through the Chunnel is good news IMO bearing in mind where we’re starting from. Hopefully we could have a reactivated Ripple Lane and also the Paris-Daventry (as you note, things have gone quiet on this front too)…

Bad news for international freight - sounds like Eurotunnel are cancelling planned investment including reopening of Ripple Lane: https://www.ft.com/content/c4d6ccf4-7915-4500-8953-a8709d93ebde
