i wonder if ‘Lumo’ could ultimately be First’s answer to ‘Mega’/‘Flix’. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the brand expand beyond the ECML service.
Some other thoughts from a price-conscious traveller who often travels between Edinburgh and London…
- I’m surprised that it’s not reservation only...
Does selling tickets for the Stagecoach Jet 747 service not seem odd, given Stagecoach-owned Megabus are presumably one of their main competitors? In fact, it looks like Megabus already sells tickets for that service...
McGills and First accepting each other’s tickets in First 9A and McGills 38. See www.firstglasgow.com/9 for further info. A sensible move for customers of both companies in this time.
There’s similar cooperation between McGills and Stagecoach, including between Glasgow and QEUH...
I guess it is. But with the quality of that offering low (lighting, temperature, seat quality, ride quality) and price relatively high, it seems like they could be doing a better job. If we’re comparing seat to seat, the coach may well win (it does for me). Compare it to some kind of flat...
I did the Riga to Moscow sleeper in the lowest class about 18 months ago, something like a ‘sleeping shelf’ would be a good way of describing it. The benches were so hard that it was really difficult to sleep, but solve that problem and it’d be fine. Open plan, like a big dorm room in a hostel...
When travelling between Edinburgh and Glasgow, the only reruns offered are day returns (£13.60 off peak / £26.20 peak). If returning on a different day, you have to buy two singles (£13.40 off peak / £15.30 peak).
However, booking a journey to another station a bit further will give the option...
It strikes me as a little crazy that the Scottish Government gives a huge subsidy to Caledonian Sleeper’s luxury products, yet the excellent Megabus Gold service, targeting folk with much less income, was allowed to fold. I imagine just having a modest subsidy of something like £20 per passenger...
That seems like such an obvious solution. Maybe very minimal announcements (eg “now approaching Glasgow Central”) and live announcements about delays etc, but nothing else. It would make the whole experience so much more relaxing. Surprised no ToC has done it yet.
All Sleepers cancelled tonight (from Twitter)
"Service Update: We regret that all Sleeper services will be CANCELLED tonight due to power issues on the West Coast Main Line. We're in the process of arranging alternative transport, please standby for updates to follow..."
Thanks for the many replies. Just to clarify, when I asked about boarding an earlier train via Twitter I didn’t mention the bike retrieval, as I hadn’t considered the potential problem until I arrived at the locked station!
I don’t blame the security guard, who I don’t imagine would have the...
A few weeks ago I was travelling Transpennine Express from Manchester to Edinburgh on an Advance ticket. I saw about 90 minutes before travelling that my train would be terminated at Preston with a replacement bus (due to lack of staff). It was due in at 11:30pm, late enough, so I tweeted and...
Boarding the 2359 Megabus from Victoria to Glasgow last night, they weighed the suitcase of the woman in front of me. It was just under 20kg, so she was allowed on. The staff said that they have to enforce the weight luggage as of today (ie yesterday).
Not worrying about luggage has always been...
