What was the last change you were genuinely excited about?

The Cumbrian Coast route getting a Sunday service.

Begging getting more common on the railway?

I've seen this in Preston Alistair and what you say is 100% correct. When I've travelled from Bradford to Glasgow via Preston I usually go to the small Sainsburys in the city centre if I have a lengthy wait in Preston. If anyone can walk from the station to Sainsburys and back again without...

Should Grand Central order the new Hitachi Trains?

I cannot comment on the routes you mention, but I know the Bradford end of the route has been absolutely shocking.

Should Grand Central order the new Hitachi Trains?

Your right about the reliability of the 221s. If Grand Central do indeed replace the 180s with 221s then hopefully they will do a massive marketing campaign with rock bottom prices because their reputation has hit rock bottom this year.

Should Grand Central order the new Hitachi Trains?

I wonder if Grand Central are looking at the soon to be withdrawn Mk5 stock as a medium term replacement for the 180s. The Mks are 125mph coaches so you would need a 125mph diesel locomotive. The only locomotive I can think of that is 125mph capable is the class 67.

Am I the only passenger who prefers / preferred Pacers to Sprinters ?

During the 90s there used to be some diagrams which were 156+14x combos over the Settle to Carlisle. I would always sit in the pacer for 2 reasons. The first reason was because the 156 unit would be jam packed and the second reason was the views from a pacer (especially the 144s) were much better.

Vaping on Trains and vaping in general

I quit smoking 2 years ago and went onto a vape pen. I never smoked on a train until it was banned but I am guilty of vaping on a train from time to time if the carriage I am travelling on is empty.

Class 230 units training/introduction on the Borderlands line: updates

Bought a freedom of the North West 7 day rover and headed from Bradford to Bidston to try out the 230s as far as Shotton. Waited patiently for the 1633 Bidston to Wrexham service only for 230010 to arrive half an hour late. I got say down and was told by the conductor that the train had failed...

    May 2023 changes

Im not at all surprised that services are being cut again Between Bradford Forster Square to Skipton and Ilkley. I've observed Bradford bound trains at Bingley practically empty, while the Leeds trains always have healthy loadings. Forster Square station itself feels unsafe, especially at night...

Freedom of North West 4 in 8 day rover.

Good evening all. I purchased a 4 in 8 day Freedom of the North West rover ticket on Friday 15th July. Because I purchased the ticket before the "do not travel" message was imposed by Northern for travel on the 18th and 19th of July,I still have 1 day left as I had Intended to travel on those...

195s truly awful, not a step forward

The plus points to the 195s compared to a 158 are obviously a higher top speed, better disabled access and better acceleration........but that is where it ends. It's only my opinion, but the 3 car 158s are the best of the Northern fleet. The only thing that let's the 2 car versions down are the...

Printed publicity - still necessary in the era of digital technology?

I've given Transdev some stick in the past, but when it comes to printed timetables they are some of the best.

Which new rolling stock are you most looking forward to travel on (2022 and beyond)?

Looking forward to having my first trips on the class 755s to compare them with the awful class 195s I'm used to travelling on.

There are too many preserved railways in the UK: what can be done to make them more viable?

I wonder if a lack of Interchange between the national rail network and some preserved railways has any influence on whether visitors choose to visit certain preserved railways. Take the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. Its platforms are adjacent to the national rail platforms which is a...
