Looking at the photos of 484's at Ryde Tunnel, it looks like they have just much a space, as they did/do on the London Underground.
I think you are being a bit unfair to Network Rail and South Western Railway, as they are not responsible for the rain, nor were they responsible for the Covid pandemic.

Judging by how many bangs and rattles the 68 and 19 registered 400MMC's, have that are operated by Stagecoach in North Lancashire, I am very very surprised that they haven't drop to bits yet.

First taking-over Bolton, would make a lot of sense. Especially when you consider that Bolton depot, is owned by the Jarvis family, and Andrew Jarvis, is a senior manager at First.
