Some of the Guildford fast trains *do* call at CLJ. If you want to save money then you could get a train that does, then touch in with your Oyster PAYG and take the Overground (in either direction!) to Highbury & Islington, which is only £1.60 peak. If you don't want to do that, then forget...

It isn't the case that all London Overground ticket offices are bad. The guy at my local Overground station (on the Euston-Watford line) seems to quite enjoy the chance to sell more complicated tickets. I suspect they get a bit bored of spending most of their day topping up Oyster cards.
