    May 2026 timetable

As some on who travels on SWR almost everyday I would say most guards do get off the train and check, but there are a minority who open them straight away. What I have found noticeable in when on a 701 operated service to/from Reading, the train is often early at both Staines and Ascot. So...

Yet Another Dire Day On The North Downs Line

Unfortunately a unit failed due to no cab heating. There was also a driver shortage to make things worse.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

So whilst it is annoying the 701s show London Waterloo on the side, they are not technically not a downgrade on the 450s in that regard.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

I’m pretty sure 450s used to have London Waterloo on the side when on rounder services?

GWR Class 230 Information, Movements & Discussion.

Looks like the Turbo that does 2P04 from Reading Paddington, which forms the Greenford branch shuttle, is booked to go empty to West Ealing sidings. Suggests it will remain there spare for the day.

Yet Another Dire Day On The North Downs Line

Unfortunately this line is a terrible mix of a too small fleet of increasingly unreliable trains, plus a seemingly permanent shortage of train crew. Really can’t see how things will improve until extra turbos get sent up after the Class 175 introduction. Even then, no doubt train crew will still...

Yet Another Dire Day On The North Downs Line

Usually an additional stop is put on the next train to ensure those stations with only a 2 hour service dont have such a gap. There’s a high chance this was done, but perhaps it was never put onto the system.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

So there is no reason why phase 1,2 etc stations could not have been done the same way. It was a choice to put evening restrictions on off peak singles/returns. The question I want to know is who made this decision.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

Apologies, BRfares website says off peak tickets are valid after 0930 and does not mention any evening restrictions. Presumably then passengers from London to Iver, Langley etc have no peak evening peak restrictions, as they are Elizabeth Line only, so the point still stands.

Project Oval: TfL win DfT contract to expand contactless system to 233 rail stations by May 2024, Railcards coming to contactless payment cards

Can we stop with this idea that Oval is bringing stations in line with the rest of London and South East. An off peak return from say, Maidenhead to London is valid throughout the evening peak. Why should those of us who live on the now oval area of SWR, outside of London, have to pay extra?

Yet Another Dire Day On The North Downs Line

I agree. If there is ever the money for extra services it should be used to run extra stopping services to Guildford, allowing the Gatwick trains to be sped up. Half hourly to Gatwick is perfectly acceptable in my opinion, and slots in with the other services it interfaces with.

Yet Another Dire Day On The North Downs Line

Am I correct in saying there is no rostered spare unit in peak time at Reading TCD? If so, technically there isn’t enough stock, as there should really be a rostered “hot” spare.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Thank you for the reply, sorry for going off topic:D Back on topic, 1N95 which should be 701 operated, has been cancelled today due to “more trains than usual needing repair”.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

So how would, for example, a driver leave Staines if heading to the sidings or Feltham depot at around 1am if the dispatch staff have finished. I’m not 100% sure when dispatch staff finish so perhaps they are always there at that time.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Surely then guards would have to travel with trains down the depot if the nearest station doesn’t have a dispatcher. That must be a headache. also, what makes a 701 different from other SWR stock?

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Hopefully they can also stop the system from announcing the entire calling pattern of a service after every stop. Incredibly annoying when travelling from Reading where there is 17 stops:lol:

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

That is a positive change, as 2H96 only has a 5 minute turnaround before forming 2C19. Now it has 15 minutes before forming 2O17. 1N92 now has 22 minutes before forming 2C19.

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

I wonder whether the decision to replace a 2x450 diagram, which then replaces a 2x455 diagram, rather than replace the 2x455 directly, is crew related, or whether SWR are actually looking at which services need to be 10 coaches.

Yet Another Dire Day On The North Downs Line

There are nearly constant adverts for Reading based conductors recently, so from that point of view GWR are trying. Drivers, which has been a problem the last few weeks, is obviously a completely different situation. As for reliability of the trains, the less said about the Turbos the better...

Class 701 'Aventra' trains for South Western Railway: progress updates

Yes, I meant 2C14  I often catch 2C12 so had that in my head at the time. That train usually has people standing by Egham and Staines too. Totally agree about the Reading services being very busy, although I have no idea whether they are more deserving than any other line. 1762364810...
