    Oyster to Epsom

Not exactly. Stoneleigh, Ewell East and Ewell West are in Zone 6 and are in the Borough of Epsom and Ewell, not in Greater London. At the time of the introduction of Zones 1 - 6, I lived in south London. I remember the debate in the local press about Epsom. Those pressing for Epsom to be...

Price competition on South WCML creates fare anomalies

I seem to remember that Barry Doe explained in RAIL magazine that direct services between origin and destination attract a proportion of the revenue allocation unless they are overtaken, but that journeys which require a change do not normally attract any allocation if direct services are...

    London to Oxford AND Banbury

If returning on the same day as the outward journey, it's perfectly valid to excess one leg of an Off-Peak Day Return to an Off-Peak Return by a different route. This can be necessary where Day Return tickets are available on some but not all of the routes between two stations. For example, two...

Travelling via Zone 1: do you need to tap out and back in at the place you change trains?

Agreed. There would normally be no additional charge. The use of the words normally and generally in my posts is to allow for the possibility that a pattern of behaviour may draw an individual to the attention of revenue protection inspectors. But travelling from Z5 to Z6 via Z1 without any...

Travelling via Zone 1: do you need to tap out and back in at the place you change trains?

If the Zone 4-6 Travelcard is held on Oyster, and they hold a sufficient pay-as-you-go balance on the Oyster card to cover the price of a journey to or via Zone 1, then there would normally be no charge and generally no offence would have been committed because they would hold a valid ticket or...

    Refund on a Complicated Journey

    A splash on the home page of https://wymetro.com/ shows "Industrial Action affecting Northern train services. Saturdays 10, 17 & 24 November, and 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 December".

Doncaster to Barton-on-Humber - is it (or should it be) valid via Hull?

I don't see how rail replacement buses can play any role in the calculation of the shortest route between the origin and the destination printed on the ticket. The provision of a rail replacement bus for part of a journey does sometimes open up a journey opportunity which would not normally be...

Doncaster to Barton-on-Humber - is it (or should it be) valid via Hull?

I agree with ForTheLoveOf that the shortest route, defined in the paragraph "CALCULATING SHORTEST DISTANCES" on page 1 of the National Routeing Guide Instructions, is the shortest route wholly by rail. That is the only way that it is possible to calculate "the throughout distance for travel...

GWR confirmed as charging for tickets by post

Good idea. But you can save an extra 15p by buying a Stourbridge Town to Stourbridge Junction Child Single (50p).

Leamington Spa to London Marleybone - 3 x per week

Do you need to work on the same 3 days each week? A weekly season ticket can start on any day of the week. There would appear to be significant savings available if you can organise your work to attend on later days in week 1 and earlier days in week 2.

RDG trial/Budget announcement: 26-30 Railcard from Spring 2018

No. The Conditions are different. The 16-25 Railcard has no minimum fare in July and August. The minimum fare applies to the 26-30 Railcard in every month. The 26-30 Railcard is available in digital form only. The 16-25 Railcard is available on paper card, plastic or digital.

RDG trial/Budget announcement: 26-30 Railcard from Spring 2018

It seems more likely that the same approach currently used for 16-25 Railcards will be adopted. I expect the 3-year 26-30 Railcard to be available until the day before one's 29th birthday.

    Anytime Short Return?

If the introduction of the Anytime Short Return had added a new ticket giving the opportunity to return at a later date, while retaining all existing tickets, that would have been welcome. But the inconsistent way in which the Anytime Short Return has been implemented has done no favours to the...
