How do you top up Glasgow Subway Smart Card Please

Any amount apparently. But I usually use the machines and from memory it's £5/10/20 https://www.spt.co.uk/tickets/subway-smartcard/

Trivia: shortest train journey crossing a national border (both within the UK and abroad)?

Singapore (Woodlands KTM station) to Johore (Malaysia) are quite close. The causeway crossing between them is under one mile.

    Is this renewable energy nonsense-on-stilts?

Using the air turbulence created by a train to drive a wind turbine sounds an inefficient form of regenerative braking

Which is the most scenic route from Edinburgh to Glasgow (GLQ)

I think it's possible to see the mountains at Callendar from near this point too. I'll double check. There's 5 routes and to me there's something interesting on all of them. 4 direct routes. The fifth currently requires a change at Falkirk

    Bristol To Edinburgh

I've done this trip and similar in the opposite direction often enough. Edinburgh to Birmingham via Carlisle, then a short hop to bristol. No brainer. Advances probably with avanti. My 2nd choice would be via London but it feels longer.

Which is the most scenic route from Edinburgh to Glasgow (GLQ)

I feel that the Airdrie route wins scenically with the central section over bleak windswept moorland. The views over the canal to the Campsie fells on the route via Falkirk are good though. Apparently there's a 17c dragoon buried with his horse in the moss there.

Stirling and Perth. One train per day doesn't stop - the northbound Aberdeen sleeper

Trivia: Through stations with platforms numbered in 'reverse' order.

Springburn. The ticket office is on a bridge but to reach platform 1, its a matter of crossing the through tracks by a footbridge. Dunfermline Town as well. The ticket office is on platform 2.

Consecutive station names starting with the same letter

After Dalreoch the train would stop at Cardross and Craigendoran. Also Arrochar & Tarbet and Ardlui then Morar and Mallaig. Hillington East then Hillington West. Paisley Gilmour St and Paisley St James. Greenock Central and Greenock West. 3 pairs on one train.

    Stranraer "Boat Train"

At Carlisle on passenger trains in 1980 and 1981, 47473 Landore, 427 Eastfield, 425 Finsbury Park, 413 Gateshead, 457?? 040?? 513 'Severn' Old Oak Common, 407 Gateshead. None of these on the sleeper service but they worked in so may have worked it later.

What is this on Tornado and Flying Scotsman?

Snifting valve or anti vacuum valve for the superheater. It allows cool air into the superheated flues and stops the pistons drawing in smoke box ash when coasting. It shouldn't vent steam except maybe for an instant when the driver opens the regulator

    Why "V" for Western Region?

Interesting question. Scottish Region working timetables used to have the full list of 2-digit codes and how they were formed. I'm sure. I thought I'd seen a list on the web but cannot now find. The north bank electrics were substantially on former North British Railway lines so the steam trains...

SPT consultation for Buchanan Bus Station

There's also an on-street terminus in West George St (38c) - not mentioned so far

(trivia) What is the busiest station not used as a terminus by any service

Charing Cross in Glasgow has no terminating trains and has 2m passengers, as does Buchanan St. Paisley Gilmour St - mentioned above - has over 3m. All figures from Wikipedia. I think Glasgow Queen St Low Level must have around 7-9m passengers and no terminating trains. Users of the High Level...

    Caledonian Sleeper question

Use the scotrail site. It suggests bikes are carried. There's a very long thread which somewhere explains how you get into Waverley for an 0450 departure The thread title is simply Caledonian Sleeper. There's 18000 posts

SPT consultation for Buchanan Bus Station

Also Cochrane St, George St (as well as George Sq), Holm St, Cathedral St bridge and Renfrew St. Some have been in use for 50 years or more. Some are currently not used because of temporary diversions after the Central Station fire or George Sq reconstruction. Where is the on street terminus at...

Scottish Labour would build Glasgow Airport rail link

From memory there was to be a branch from Paisley St James eastwards into the airport. I thought it was a well advanced proposal when the plug was pulled

Avanti West Coast via Settle (for WCML Bridge replacement next January?)

Yesterday it appears, 37% of southbound Shuttles via Settle were cancelled. Northbound 28% of these Shuttles were cancelled. Of the five northbound shuttles that did run then the connecting service to Glasgow didn't wait for three of them. The connecting service was despatched before the...
