Adding to the list of false destinations on SWR (SR SW Division in my day). Up stoppers from Bournemouth to Waterloo (93) were shown on platform departure boards as being for Surbiton, until the train reached Basingstoke. I don't recall the down services as being advertised for Pokesdown
Here's some extracts from the January 1985 issue of B.R.25952 "Ticket Examiners Handbook", including amendments issued in April 1985, that refer to 7-Day Season Tickets issued to Females. It's the only indication that women travelled by train in 1985, as all references to ticket irregularities...

I can explain train protection on the Southern Region as it was forty years ago. Some things don't...
You're right, it can be (and usually is) chaos, but fortunatlely not for long. It should work, but you can't plan for passengers behavior. bb21 mentioned passengers habits in his post #43. P5 at Wimbledon is where you catch a train to Waterloo, so it's not surprising that the odd terrminator...
In m y experience, terminating up suburban trains at Wimbledon isn't as easy as it sounds. I had two such trains as a Guard: 1816 from Horsham, and 1826 from Shepperton. Both terminated at Wimbledon and then ecs to Wimbledon Park Each one had two minutes waiting time in platform 5 before the...
Thank you - its bveen decades since I worked on the raillway, but if I can contributem I will. Tell ius more avout what might be happening at Claphanm J (or is it 'management eye only' stuff)?
It was the 21V43 train. Here;s the turn in full:
Clapjam Junction Duty 168
Rest day Saturday
On 1605
Pass 1625 to Strawberry Hill
Strawberry Hill Depot 17+37

In my case, dealing with situations of a platform face on both sides of the train wasn't covered by the Training School. It was something you found out about when doing your route learning. In addition to Guildford , which is the subject of this thread, 'the up road at Ascot has (or had,maybe...
This article on the 'Ian Viiisit...' website explains what's happening:

As I remember them, they were behind the shelves at the rear of the service couinter area. Marsden's book has this photo of the restaurant car together with shots of the first and second class compartments.
Thanks to swt_passenger for highlighting the error I made when describing the number of traction motors under each DM of a 4REP. As Big Jumby 74 suspected, I should have said two motors per bogie, so 4 for each DM giving a total of eight for the unit. Apologies to all, I didn't didn't intend to...
I have many happy memories of working REP/TC sets to Bournemouth and Weymouth. Although I never rose higher than link 3 at Clapham Junction, I had a rostered Saturday afternoon trip Waterloo (1535) - Weymouth - Waterloo (2209). A bonus was that the 'spare' turn at Clapham was also in link 3...
My top 3:
1. Waterloo. The LSWR finally got it right at Waterloo, and just in time for it to become the Southern'# HQ. The scale and layout all came together to present a confident railway the pushed electrification forward into the 30's. It was never my home depot, butt it holds many happy...
I have two caps - a red railman's cap that was the only uniform item I had working on P11 at Clapham Junction before a place was found for me at the Guard's school at Eastligh and then full Guards uniform which I've still got! When I finally left the railway, I had to hand my kit in at Waterloo...
1951 SR units (EPB, BEP, CEP etc) had their motors under the end coaches,so guards compartments were behind the drivers desk with a sliding door separating them. Access was via double inward opening doors - one on a standard door catch and the other lever operated. On two car units there was...
Going back a bit before the Poole stoppers were introduced (after electrification to Weymouth?) the timetable before that had three trains per hour off peak Waterloo-Bournemouth. Fast (91) at xx.35, slow (93) at xx.42 and semi (92) at xx45. This looks odd at first sight, but benefited...
@GRALISTAR You’re right, my last sentence was possibly a bit too much. I was trying to think of a suitable way to finish, and that seemed appropriate as the red mist descended !Again, yes, the report is well referenced,. I’ll admit that I didn’t follow all of them, but did read all the...
I don’t post very frequently on the forums, because my railway experience dates from 40 years ago, and I don’t feel qualified to coment on many of thetopics raieed. Havig said that, ask me about the Southern Region (SW Division) at the end of the SUB era from the pint of view of a...
SUB's were still in service when I went through the South-Western Divisions Training School at Eastleigh, so I've attached the coupling diagram for EMU groups A (4SUB), D (2/4EPB) and E (4VEP, 4CIG). SUB's didn't have different ends, the connectors at each end were idential. However, after the...
My apologies for this very late response. I was away cat-sitting and their owner was n turn delayed in relieving me. Anyway, my pink books are buried in a pile of other railway stuff, but I had my Waterloo Station Train Departure Books for the period commencing 30 September 1985 on the...
