As you've discovered, getting through Stansted is hit-and-miss and an hour is not enough, but you actually have considerably more leeway in practice. The Stansted-London train is (I think) unreservable so all that could matter is the booked train out of Paddington. The journey planners tend to...
Does the first word after the comma mean "studying" or the town in Berkshire? :P
(Hint: if it's the former, the word's usage is terribly pretentious and only really suitable for up-themselves individuals on University Challenge - anyone in the real world uses "studying")
Much like Northern's scheme, the "penalised" is at liberty to ignore the penalty and deal with the matter at court.
It should of course be called a (reverse) Fixed Penalty scheme. Important to be terminologically precise :-)
It is a "business / cost decision" that prevents a punter from showing up at Falls of Cruachan at 7am on a Tuesday and buying a 14-day first class ALR from a TVM using a combination of cheques, RTVs and 5p pieces.

To expect any entity to be anything less than maximally tax-efficient is to live in cloud cuckooland. Similarly to expect anyone to be less than maximally fare-efficient on the railways.
Did I miss anything in the thread?
Feigning ignorance is fine when you have nothing else. Have a nice day.

Rubbish. The "problem" which you talk about is entirely arbitrary. It is "solved" in the overwhelming number of cases with "stop ****ing about with excuses and pay". You are...
Unfortunately you forfeit any right to the common sense or practicality end of the argument when you insist that the fitness for purpose of (unmanned) facilities is their ability to cope with ticketing issues of an arbitrarily obscure nature.
That such a notion is merely a matter of software...
