They are, but they aren’t very watertight.

I suppose 158’s on a true Express service is quite nostalgic, and it’s something we are likely to see less and less of going forwards.
WCRC could return to advertising its own diesel railtours like it used to if it wanted to.
However, the reality is probably that WCRC aren’t overly bothered by losing diesel railtour business as their compliant coaching stock is probably already stretched and better focused on doing steam...
Thank you for the explanation.
I’m sure I’ve seen late night Manchester-Sheffield services travel via Kirkgate, so how does that happen then? (Or am I imagining it?)
I will defend the general public here a little; there are habits to be broken here. If you have been used to jumping on any Northern train that says ‘Leeds’ on it for years to reach Meadowhall, why would you check or notice when one doesn’t? You would continue to assume that they all stop, until...
Meadowhall is only 400k users per annum behind Wakefield Westgate.
There is also going to be an obvious risk of passengers being over-carried from the Sheffield end, with passengers expecting it to call at Meadowhall like all the other Northern services.
I will remember this post, next time...
It’s not snobbery, I use Northern pretty much every day of the week and I strongly believe that although they aren’t perfect, that they are on a positive trajectory. Now it has been unofficially confirmed that it will be 3-car 170’s I am happy with that. TP 185’s would have been preferable to...
Two of those are indirect/glacially-paced and the other two are two carriages maximum. Additional capacity from Meadowhall would have been extremely useful.
Hopefully someone knowledgeable can answer that for us. My guesses would be reducing a 4-carriage 150 formation from the Knottingley service, or the Sheffield via Moorthorpe routes to 2 carriages, to displace 158’s to operate the new service. Someone did mention a 170 stabling at Leeds for most...
I think it would make sense as TP are in a fairly luxurious position with rolling stock, and if Northern are planning 158’s (an assumption) then 185’s with a superior door layout might be able to squeeze in a Meadowhall stop instead.
