Hello Andy, thanks for that bud. I'm currently based at bovington which I guess you being an ex tankie you know well.
I'm in the marines so we have to give a years notice and my main worries are 1 how often the jobs come up and 2 the amount of time it takes to go through the process.
I'm assuming you can be in civi employment for example lorry driving whilst going through the selection process as no one could afford to be unemployed waiting for the training to start.
Interesting that you say not to bother going in as guard etc, I thought the same thing as you would need to really want to do that kind of job in the first place to be able to do it for afew years before hand.

I though I would pm you instead of the public forum.
First don't go giving any notice with the army as nothing on the railway is a sure thing.
The selection is long and quite difficult and a good covering letter is important. You used to be able to do the tests privately but I don't think you can now. Yes armoured stuff is good as I'm an ex tankie but that just counts towards a few brownie points with as you say driving hours etc. I was a hgv driver and also pilot but the other guys were from all sorts, insurance agent ,pe instructor, life guard and so on. Unfortunately finding a trainee job is the hard part so keep a look out on this forum. If you find any and need help let me know. ps it took me 2 years to get a foot in the door. with regard to the guard job first, I wouldn't bother as you will be ****ed off doing that .Andy
