There's a diagram of the plans HERE . I've heard different things about the bridge, one that there's going to be a new one built or they'll reuse the 'newish' one. One thing's for sure, there's going to be some tight bends on a steep hill when the road's moved northwest to accommodate the line doing the same.
It seems, as far as the recently posted links show, ie #10,797, there’ll be a completely new deck, with the existing one left in place. That’s not quite what I was expecting…

What is planned to be done with the two bridges made redundant by Baker Viaduct? A new bike & walk route perhaps?
The plans clearly show them being completely fenced off, so probably not. Neither direction really gets you anywhere, other than an operational railway.

It'd be great if it was, linking Scout Hill and the greenways with Ravensthorpe, but I've not seen anything along those lines.

Neither direction really gets you anywhere, other than an operational railway.

On the contrary, at the North end of the current bridge there's a bridleway/greenway which is a branch off the Spen Valley Greenway, and at the south end of Ravensthorpe station there's another, which eventually leads via quiet roads to another greenway, the Calder Valley one, with nothing but very busy roads in between the two currently. It'd be a good link between the two.

Two new photographs on Andrew Wikinson's Flickr site, taken today (Friday), show the new bridge at Calder Road open to pedestrians and with blacktop being laid for vehicles. A caption says

The last few remaining hours of the old Calder Road bridge is upon us - with demolition scheduled for the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The replacement bridge is currently open to pedestrians but it will be closed as well from 04:00 until 12:00 on Sat 08th August - replaced with a shuttle bus for those needing to traverse the closed off section.

Perhaps the old Leeds Road and Colne Bridge Road bridges are due for the chop at the same time?

Possible, but would they have the manpower and machines necessary to do that, and wouldn’t there be a problem fitting in the larger number of spoil trains? Assuming they use the usual process?

But here’s a link to the photo, showing the tarmac nearly finished and pedestrian access, as mentioned:

The latest On Track with Tim video on YouTube shows the surfacing in progress on the A62 bridge plus a video of a drive over the realignment.



Video also shows progress at Huddersfield station with work on the new subway and roof.

Latest Robert Stenhouse Flickr pictures shows Calder Road bridge being demolished this morning (Sat).
Perhaps they will move onto Colne Bridge while the line is closed.

The surfacing at the Leeds Rd Bridge was videod a week ago, although only more recently uploaded.
Yes, we have been spoiled as to how quickly a video recording of work carried out has regularly appeared on YouTube. I am sometimes amazed at the effort to edit, produce and then upload a video done in less than 24 hours, so a few days is quite understandable sometimes. I appreciate it anyway.

Both Sarah and Tim have done excellent work recording the progress of the work.

Most notable (though not strictly for this thread) was two weeks ago on the HS2 delta junction, when each of the two Water Orton viaducts had a whole span placed over the northbound M42 using self-propelled modular transporters. Motorway closed from 2100 Friday, spans on the move before 0300, two separate video makers had video on Youtube by breakfast time.

Drove over the new a62 leeds road bridge today. There is a very sharp s bend in place from the existing road towards Huddersfield over the bridge with 20 mph painted on the road. All the cycle lane bits are green and there are grippy red surfaces towards the junction just after the bridge. This suggests a 20mph speed limit may be permanent on this new bit of road? I can't see how they would straighten it out to achieve 40mph again with the alignment. Not a huge issue but id imagine there will be accidents in this area if the tight s bend layout remains and speed cameras are not installed to slow people down. Good to see progress though... the biggest relief will be when Calder road reopens so people can avoid dewsbury and ravensthorpe traffic.

The new bridge is only half its final width so far, once the old bridge is down there‘ll be another matching bridge joined to it, similar size, (it may even be larger), and it will form a large parallelogram shape. The road will then be straightened to run diagonally across the full bridge.

This is why only one side of the new bridge has a full parapet, the other is temporary.

I presume that at the far end of the steel structure we can see the shape of the future grade-separated junction where the slows and fasts converge? The with of the viaduct suggests that the actual turnouts will be on the side closest to the camera though, presumably to avoid needing to maintain turnouts directly on a bridge!
It's now 10 days since this question was asked, but it seems worth adding that the actual flyover structure, in the angle between the Leeds and Wakefield lines at Ravensthorpe, is visible in an excellent new picture on Robert Stenhouse's Flickr site. The picture also seems to show that the fragment of platform which has survived until now is finally being removed.


Going towards Dewsbury, the new alignment continues with 4 tracks until the last possible moment before it meets (and briefly crosses) the existing alignment. An extra reason for this, discussed in the documentation, is to provide as much distance as possible between the 2-4 transition and the junction with the Wakefield line, for timetabling reasons.

Yes, they explained in one of the PWI lectures that by design they’ll have enough length to hold a stopping train on the connecting lines in either direction without impacting on the fast lines or Wakefield lines. I assume the length allows for the necessary distances beyond stop signals?

I remember the relative heights of the Calder Road bridge spans being discussed before, particularly regarding the gradients required for the fast lines to reach the flyover height. So thanks to the links provided a few posts back I then found a NR elevation drawing, which show a majority of the height gain is already obtained by the time they pass the relocated station, the platform lines will also be slightly lower than before, this may continue towards the flyover structure:

Minimum chord length 600m according to the Proofs of Evidence - Engineering and Design:


3.1.58 Whilst the fast lines are grade separated the slow lines still join the Wakefield
lines with an at-grade junction. To generate the required system capacity and
regulation of trains, an important operational feature is that slow line chords
are required between the proposed Ravensthorpe East Junction and a re-
modelled Thornhill LNW Junction. In simple terms, this is a piece of plain line
in-between the junctions where trains, if required, can lay over “pause” whilst
awaiting a clear signalled path. Without these chord lines the new junction
would not function as required, due to slow trains becoming stationary on the
preceding 2-track section from Leeds whilst waiting at a clearing signal. At
this location slow trains are being quickly “caught” by the next timetabled fast
service (see previous commentary), therefore a layout without a regulating
chord would severely inhibit capacity and associated performance of the
system. See illustration sketches below showing how chord lines are
arranged for the different operational layouts.

3.1.61 At GRIP2 it is understood that the slow-line chords were initially sized to
accommodate possible future freight train lengths of up to 750m. In practise,
there are no current plans to operate such long train formations over the
Leeds route (in normal service), and as part of the GRIP3 development I
proposed that the minimum the chord lengths under consideration should be
sufficient to stable a 200m long passenger services (in accordance with the
ITSS) exiting or joining the through main line. For a 200m long train,
considering signalling and track geometry factors, it was established that the
chords needed to be an absolute minimum overall length of about 600m was
required to provide safe separation of trains. In addition to establishing the
minimum chord lengths, the following principles were used to generate the
junction and linking chord geometries at Ravensthorpe:
• All slow line routes through junction switches and crossings (S&C) and
adjoining chords should enable 70mph running. This allows trains to run
as close as practicable to the existing 75mph linespeeds utilising
standard S&C track components for ease and speed of future
maintenance.
• The through route for TRU fast trains is proposed at 100mph (or more) to
exploit the most efficient and cost-effective line speed capability of the 4-
track route section to the west of Thornhill LNW junction (towards
Mirfield and Huddersfield).
• Critical S&C track components should remain clear of underline
bridge/viaduct structures to minimise faults due to vertical deflection,
twist, and temperature movements. In practical terms, with consideration
of stabling chord lengths, this limits the position of the new Ravensthorpe
East Junction to the east side of any proposed viaduct and/or
embankment over the River Calder flood plain.
• Junction S&C components should be where reasonably practicable
located on straight track at a constant gradient and where joining tracks
are vertically coincident.

As mentioned in the comments and the Sarah Bell video it's a shame about the loss of the historic bridges, but practicalities meant new structures.

Tim's Youtube also shows Austhope Lane bridge East of Leeds has had repacement decks lifted in by a huge crane during the weekend closure.
Not many bridges left to start work on east of Huddersfield.

This morning, new canopy supports are in at Huddersfield station, the stone cladding looks good even though it doesn’t match the old stone work size wise. Just wonder if they are going to reuse this stone in the ground over the road as there look to be a substantial concrete lip.

I expect the stone will weather eventually to be more similar to the rest, maybe the original stonework looked bright like that when new?

I think there's also work to be done to the bridge where the down line from Huddersfield (the future down slow) goes under the Calder Valley line. I think it is to be decapitated and recapitated for electrification clearance, requiring a closure of both lines, and the disused span is to be fiilled with foamed concrete.

Interesting choice of phrase! Do you mean bridge deck removed, then raised then rebuilt?

Show that both existing arches are to be demolished and replace with precast concrete structures. However the drawings show retention of the disused span/tunnel for an access track, rather than being filled in. Always possible that things changed due to subsequent inspection of the structure though. It's slightly surprising that the opportunity wasn't taken to provide a wider tunnel to avoid the need for refuges and provide a proper 'green zone' walking route through the tunnel but I guess that it'd increase construction time significantly (disrupting trains), increase costs, and isn't really needed if the adjacent tunnel provides the access.

A wider tunnel would also need longer beams across it, which would also have to be deeper to keep the same structural strength. This might trigger raising of the Calder Valley tracks or lowering of the Huddersfield ones.
