I can speak a bit about the Bluebell. Everyone in operations planning has been working really hard. I'm not one of those in charge, but I've played my small part. Overnight, the entire train service had to be replanned. We don't have the diesel locos nor the crews to run our full service without steam. So the operations management guys spent a good two days flat out re-writing timetables. Then everyone else - roster clerks, marketing, train planning, etc had to react to these changes. Suddenly, we didn't need ten steam drivers for Bluebell on parade, but three diesel crews. I think some of my colleagues worked through the night. With some quick thinking and clever planning, by day 3 of steam ban, brake van rides were started with steam at Sheffield Park. Other things have been arranged, like footplate access and yard visits. Bluebell on Parade has sadly been cancelled, and a scaled back diesel service instead installed.
Turning now to my other volunteer role, where I found myself on customer-facing duty on steam ban day 1. I'd had the foresight to print out a guess at the emergency timetable to put up for the public. But before I knew it, the guard had written down the times I'd put down for their log, and the driver was working from it as well - there was no other timetable to be had!
In terms of passengers, most people were understanding, but some were very grumpy, turning away or demanding refunds. It was a tough day. Saturday was very quiet as well. Revenue must be well down. It's really not a good situation.
So please, anyone looking for something to do this Saturday/Sunday, come down to the Bluebell. Intensive (diesel) service, ride in the Pullmans, brake van rides, loco yard access. Another exciting development is on its way...
