Which heritage lines do and don't have steam bans currently?

The Bo'ness and Kinneil is operating their steam locomotive but only to Birkhill and back. Apparently there's a higher fire risk on the stretch of line between Birkhill and Manuel. As far as I know, their diesel timetables are running as normal.

I understand that a steam ban must hit heritage railway finances really hard. I also understand that management will be working harder than ever to find other ways of operating.
So there’s no criticism real or implied in this suggestion: if someone at a line running diesel locomotives and/or diesel units could share some details, there are those of us who would travel a long distance to enjoy the novelty of (for example) riding on the demu which the Bluebell has hired to cover for steam. I know this won’t be a financial life saver, but every penny counts.
I can speak a bit about the Bluebell. Everyone in operations planning has been working really hard. I'm not one of those in charge, but I've played my small part. Overnight, the entire train service had to be replanned. We don't have the diesel locos nor the crews to run our full service without steam. So the operations management guys spent a good two days flat out re-writing timetables. Then everyone else - roster clerks, marketing, train planning, etc had to react to these changes. Suddenly, we didn't need ten steam drivers for Bluebell on parade, but three diesel crews. I think some of my colleagues worked through the night. With some quick thinking and clever planning, by day 3 of steam ban, brake van rides were started with steam at Sheffield Park. Other things have been arranged, like footplate access and yard visits. Bluebell on Parade has sadly been cancelled, and a scaled back diesel service instead installed.

Turning now to my other volunteer role, where I found myself on customer-facing duty on steam ban day 1. I'd had the foresight to print out a guess at the emergency timetable to put up for the public. But before I knew it, the guard had written down the times I'd put down for their log, and the driver was working from it as well - there was no other timetable to be had!

In terms of passengers, most people were understanding, but some were very grumpy, turning away or demanding refunds. It was a tough day. Saturday was very quiet as well. Revenue must be well down. It's really not a good situation.

So please, anyone looking for something to do this Saturday/Sunday, come down to the Bluebell. Intensive (diesel) service, ride in the Pullmans, brake van rides, loco yard access. Another exciting development is on its way...

Seems like a wise decision. Stupidly, they decided to have Pannier tank 7714 hauling 8 coaches, which only made the fire worse.
7714 has managed fine the previous few weeks with not causing fires. 8 LMS/GW coaches are 7714's limit and that train is busy so needs to be that length. 13268 was on the S2/3 turn which involved a 8 coach mark 1 set including the diner, which is above 7714's limit. The only other available steam is 813 and that's weaker than the pannier, being only allowed 5 mark 1's.

So maybe put a diesel on the longer set and 7714 on a slightly shorter one then? A steam loco working at its limit is bound to have an increased fire risk!

But the result was a lineside fire that has resulted in a steam ban. How much is that going to cost?

As previous poster said, running a steam loco at its limit in these kind of conditions is asking for trouble. If reducing the number of coaches is not an option, then double head with either 813 or a diesel.

But with no diesel roster (none that I could find anyway) on their website. I’d go if there’s something of interest.
I do agree with you. As I said in an earlier post, there‘s no criticism of people working under pressure to keep their railway running. However, they could attract quite a few diesel cranks with an indication of their motive power plans during the steam ban.

Ok, know it gets posted on WNXX but not everyone subscribes so get your point. It's usually on the Railway's website but steam ban continues week by week so can be fluid (took a bit of finding but this hopefully works https://gwsr.com/about/locomotive-roster/)
This week is as follows
Today 20 (assume 20137) and 47105
Wednesday 20 (again assume 20137) and 37215
Thursday 45149 and 47105
Hope that helps?
Currently Saturday showing 20 on shuttles and 26 on afternoon diagram but if steam ban still on probably both out all day.

My thanks to all who got the diesel service going. Had a jolly on The Gin train on Saturday, back this Saturday for The Harvey's beer train
(Yes, I know it'll be hauled by a diesel, but the only icon I can find for diesel looks like this ⛽️!)

The Great Central was running steam today, as well as Tulyar and a DMU- something for everyone.
Like many lines, GCR crews have been operating engines incredibly carefully. All the engines operating are spark arrestor fitted, and being mostly larger locos they don't have to be worked as hard.
There have been some fires on the GC, as on most lines still using steam - mostly small sleeper fires from ashpan embers, as well as a few larger ones - but one benefit of the relatively regular trains is that most if the time others pass the scene before a fire gets too big.
Thankfully the Deltic weekend passed with no notable fires from the two steam locos operating. Well done to all!

Swanage is still running steam I believe. They are pretty hot on their vegetation clearance - usually daily before services start.

I was at Swanage on Saturday (01/08). All services were in the hands of 33053 & 20066.
The ticket office confirmed no steam when we bought our tickets.
’257 Squadron’ was in light steam ‘on shed’ at Swanage though.

Severn Valley is diesel only from tomorrow (tuesday 4th). A lineside fire on sunday was the final straw, especially as the weather forecast continues to be dry ahead (any rain forecast is less than 50% chance and for few hours at most).
I was going to go to the vintage day they are having at the weekend but due to this heat I won't be going.
There has been a few wildfires in the area and in Telford too.

That was down to a problem with the rostered engine rather than a steam ban. Next week is currently booked to have both diagrams as steam.

I visited the Pete Waterman's model railway at Aberystwyth yesterday and then had a trip up to Pontarfynach behind the Prince Of Wales, which is oil fired but still steam. That was pulling a full consists of coaches, but we passed the other service running and that was diesel hauled and seemed to be just 3 or 4 coaches.
Loading on ours was heavy on the way up with a coach party and several of the large visiting Jewish families that come each year, but was lighter on the return.
I did miss the smell of burning coal, though.

Steam ban on the GWR until at least end of the day on Sunday, just been updated so be 2 diesels out each day this weekend. Not confirmed what is on what at the moment.

Apparently (I cannot fully confirm this) but GCR Loughborough may have the steam ban now, apparently was put in place following the Tulyar event last weekend where they did run some steamers them.

I read somewhere that pannier tanks are particularly prone to throwing sparks - it may be that they being worked too hard, and certainly harder than in GWR/BR days, with a few exceptions (e.g. the Brecon & Merthyr line).

To add on Sunday it was steam and diesel operated with two sets in operation, naturally one set diesel hauled and the other steam.

Traditionally, yes. But all SVR based locos have been modified with spark arrestors after several iterations of designs.
As for working hard, crews have been taking it gentle. Also speeds are lower than would have been normal in GWR/BR days.

Ah ok, thank you, although TBH both the 20 & 33 were winners for me so I was more than happy with just diesel traction. :D
