Yes I know the main cutting has been done for quite a while, it’s the Leeds end now that they have started work on, newly installed coverings fitted
Lovely not been that way for a while must mean the gas main works are coming to an end.

And they were rolling out what appeared to be artificial grass mats on one slope at Heaton Lodge yesterday. Has anyone else spotted this, is that what it really was or did my eyes deceive me?
Your eyes deceive you it's just a normal geotextile, it's just green in colour. Helps keep the soil stable while grass establishes.

I took some photos this morning of the ongoing Trans Pennine Route Upgrade works at Huddersfield Station, including the new footbridge extension.

Just watched Sarah Bell's latest video of Ravensthorpe Junction. Why is there a random stub of the Huddersfield bound platform left over when the rest of the station has been completely erased?

No help at all, but I’ve never seen an answer, even though it’s been asked (without anyone ever answering) in numerous videos.

Could be as simple as providing level ground for the drivers to get out and walk to the signal post telephone. Does look like there's some steps made out of the platform remains and then a walkway.

One of my initial thoughts when it was first seen was some sort of power or signalling cable access chamber built under the platform, so retaining the platform surface intact would provide physical protection of the area until the future westbound slow track was relocated to the other side of the viaduct approach and presumably any remaining electrical stuff would be re-routed with it. But your suggestion is a good one.

From Sarah Bell's latest YouTube video, it looks like more progress is being made this weekend on the four-tracking between Huddersfield and Deighton. The video shows sleepers being installed near the Old Fieldhouse Lane footbridge.

Sleepers were laid at Old Fieldhouse Lane, between Hillhouse and Deighton, to the east of Huddersfield, on Saturday morning. It was the latest step towards creating a four-track railway between Huddersfield and Westtown, Dewsbury. A number of Class 66s on engineering trains were in the section during the weekend possession. This video also features work at the A62 Leeds Road site, where a replacement overbridge is being installed in a complex project. #transpennineexpress #trains

Both these suggestions were what first crossed my mind. I'd put money on the cable chamber one though if forced.

Actually we are in the second weekend of sleeper laying.

Some were down last Sunday on 12th July.

There are also at least 5 electrification mast brackets on the South side of Huddersfield viaduct. Just metal frames bolted to the stone work. (I drove past on Thursday)

Now that is great news. I assume a very easily photographable location?

The up line gantry signal at Thornhill L.N.W. jct I noticed is still there mounted in the stub of the platform mounted on 4 bolts been like that years that probably the reason why a bit of the platform remains?

I think that signal gantry is around 80m past the short section of platform that’s been left. (Estimated by counting sleepers on a video!)…

No the signal I mean is definately on the site of Ravensthorpe Station bolted on the remains of the up platform it protects the up line Thornhill L.N.W. jct onto the up line from the wakefield direction.

Yes. Stand outside Hoults Wine Merchants on viaduct street and look up.

(pop inside too, lovely shop. And sorry I didn’t stop to take pictures)

I think on the north side, from the plans, the masts are going to stand in the floor next to the viaduct. It’s waste land and car park rather than footpath.

I was heading north, yesterday, and before Leeds I passed over the TP route. I looked out to the left to see some shiny new masts in the cutting. They had arms fitted which were swung to be parallel to the rails. This may have been reported before but I don’t recall it.

wasn't there some tracklaying machine used for EWR? I wonder why that was not used here
The contractor will choose whatever they consider most efficient - unlike EWR there is an existing track adjacent to work from, which may favour a different technique. Also they will consider what equipment their own company has access to and staff trained to use.

The most obvious reason would be that it wasn't available (either in use elsewhere or requiring maintenance). Other reasons could be that the New Track Construction train works at about 1.5km a day of track laying, and needs the materials fed from wagons on the rail-borne end. It will also need access to/from the site (physical junctions as well as a timetable slot either end), and be able to keep clear of live lines.

My best guess (and it's nothing more than that) would be a combination of the time-saving from using multiple JCB-type pieces of equipment to unload a standard engineer's train that can stand alongside the formation vs the 1.5km/day of the NTC, and the issues of physically getting the NTC to the new trackbed(s). In order to lay the new track, the NTC must by necessity be sitting on the alignment of the new track.

It’s not really any faster if you’ve got an existing track to work from to deliver rail and sleepers using RRVs. The new track construction machine (NTC) needs the rails laid out ahead of it on the bottom ballast, they’re effective pulled off the end of the existing railway by small machines, and it then needs trains of sleepers queued up behind it.

In the present case, there’s no S&C for the NTC to run off the existing track onto the prepared ballast, you’d need to put in a temporary junction, and its long tail would be parked on the existing line initially. By using a delivery train the long welded rail can be delivered directly into position alongside the site, temporarily located in the four foot of the existing track, once the sleepers are craned over off the sleeper wagons transferring the rail into them is straightforward, can be done with a simple RRV.

I think it’s a case of horses for courses. I dare say the NTC might even cost more to hire/use.

Yeah I noticed this out the window of a London train, masts go all the way to the current limit of wiring on the Huddersfield line.

One of the things I took from this video (which you can see in the image in the original post) is just how close to the boundary fencing the sleepers were being laid. It feels as if there will be a large(ish) gap between the fast and slow lines at that point.

Have to admit to loving the sleeper layer machine, and the way it spaces them out!

I suspect that the fence and the tree behind it is now inside the eventual railway boundary, the new footbridge’s abutment seems to have plenty of clearance to the newly laid sleepers - I think there’s probably still a few trees to come down. At 0:51 in the video you can compare track to abutment distance with the other side.

A few photos from the back this evening showing the work, looks like all sleepers laid from just after Deighton to just before the viaduct. Looks like the UF has both rails laid the whole distance, and there’s the odd bit of rail laid for the DF.

Edit: no safety critical work done while these photos were being taken :)

More wire runs appeared at East Garforth. First noticed this morning but I think may be a few days if not a week old, not been in the office as much.

Majority of cross gates to Church Fenton now has steelwork up with fittings attached so expect to see more and more wires appear bar the three sections with bridge works ongoing, particularly Church Fenton where they appear to be waiting for the bridge blockade to do further OLE work. I assume, rightly or wrongly, wires around the two over bridges that are being rebuilt are likely to wait until their renewals are further progressed.
