Yes. It had been in the ownership of the Opus Group long before its scrap, and one of the reasons cited for Porterbrook letting it go was due to the fact that Porterbrook was because it was sick of people calling them up asking to buy it - half of the offers were bogus and misleading offers so 5868 had to go to just get rid of the headache.

What is the obsession with this unit? So it had a quick coat of paint, but once work starts on bodywork repairs it'd need another coat anyway. SETG were sensible and took the one in the best mechanical order, and not the one that looked prettiest.

The clowns who message the ROSCOs really do no one any favours - they poison the well for reputable organisations. Fortunately the leasing companies (and Porterbrook in particular) have seen through the chancers, but it is notable that those they have dealt with over the years have been of longer standing and with existing track records in preservation e.g. established preserved railways (Thumper units), AC Loco Group/ETL (87002), 125 Group (HST stock). The transfer of 5871 to SETG fits the same pattern - an established group who know their stuff.

Good to see 5868 has been binned off in consequence of the time-wasters.

Interestingly I saw a 458/5 on its own power moving in the Wimbledon depot limits at around 19:43-44 today. Wonder if its preparing for its final destination to the scraps

I don't believe the last two 458/5s have been dragged away from Wimbledon to Long Marston yet but one must be getting due as it has been some weeks since the last one left.

Surely the last two 458/5s must have departed Wimbledon for Long Marston by now? It has been roughly a month since any updates were provided in here regarding those units..

On another note, apparently the former Unimetals site is now almost clear of all scrap piles, but all the intact 455 cars are still on site..

Plus, speaking of intact 455 cars, I'm guessing Derby still has a few to get rid of?

Nope, definitely still there lingering at the back of the depot when I went past on Saturday.

Not sure how accurate but I've been told by a couple of folk from Litchurch that there on none left.

In that case that means there's only the 455 cars left at the old Unimetals site and the two 458/5s which are still at Wimbledon, I'm guessing that when those all go, this thread will no longer have a purpose as the rest of the metro fleet withdrawals/changes have long since been completed?

I don't bother with the front of the thread as I started it in 2019. But at some point I'm sure I can amend it to take that into account.

Those 458/5s are still there? I am very curious as to why they still have not left yet, given that almost all of the other metro fleet changes have happened now..

I have heard many different reasons, the most common one being that they need to be returned to the relevant leasing company in a condition fit enough for passenger services and due to that, they were held back at Wimbledon for extra remedial work before being sent back, but all of the reasons being given back then are a tad outdated now.

Honestly, as we are about to enter August and with this Friday being the "final" day of 458 operation on SWR metals, I do not know why the 458/5s are still there.

Thinking about this again.

Were the remaining two 458/5s on SWR the last to be used ?.
If so then they must have been reasonably healthy.
(so why the delay in freeing up the space albeit short sidings)
If no then it suggests they were grounded with more significant issues.
(and I bet SWR have plenty on their plate right now so those 458/5s will be low down the priority list)

Of course the 458/4s have exceeded (are exceeding) their (official ?) last day in service.

It is almost the end of August and those pesky 458/5s still haven't left Wimbledon.. though given that there are only five 701/5s left to be redelivered to SWR and just two 701/0s left to enter service, I can certainly see those 458s leaving within the next few weeks as SWR's priorities will only be focused on the 158/159 fleet and the 458/4 fleet's storage until end of contract, but this depends on how quickly SWR get the 701/5s cleared for passenger service work..
