Greater Anglia have announced that they are trialling overnight services on Friday nights to Stansted Airport over the summer

Interesting they will be running to Tottenham Hale rather than London Liverpool Street to connect with BBC the Victoria line. I don’t know whether they will be making intermediate stops at Harlow Town or Bishop’s Stortford but the latter could be useful especially given how many airline crew and airport staff live there.Greater Anglia have announced that they are trialling overnight services on Friday nights to Stansted Airport over the summer![]()
No intermediate stops at all which is disappointing as it's a half hourly service all night. I don't see why they can't run the 04:40 Liverpool Street to Stanstead Airport journey's stopping pattern overnight, at least once an hour as a stopping service and the other as the more usual limited stop. So it calls at Tottenham Hale, Cheshunt, Broxbourne, Harlow Town, Bishops Stortford and Stanstead Mountfitchet. Maybe an additional stop in Enfield Lock to help ease pressure on the N279.Interesting they will be running to Tottenham Hale rather than London Liverpool Street to connect with BBC the Victoria line. Especially as running to Tottenham Hale reduces the ability to get diverted via the Seven Sisters route if there be engineering worksInteresting they will be running to Tottenham Hale rather than London Liverpool Street to connect with BBC the Victoria line. It can presumably be diverted to Seven Sisters (for the Victoria Line) in that case.Especially as running to Tottenham Hale reduces the ability to get diverted via the Seven Sisters route if there be engineering works

New St International is pointless unless you have a load of other routes open. No one is going to get themselves to New St to then get a train. They'll just get a cab or drive from where they live to the airport.Birmingham Cross City (Longbridge to Sutton section) and New Street-International shuttle would surely be viable, surely enough demand from flights, shift workers and late night partygoers (especially students).
The fact that there isn't a "semi-local" bus service to those areas running through the night says a lot about the likely numbers of users. It's all very well having service to / from airports but people need to be able to access them at the other end. Not many people are going to want to walk more than a short distance to / from their not-so-local station at 2 in the morning and asking anyone for a lift is likely to be countered with "I might as well take you all the way" (at that time of the morning, it's the getting up and going that's the problem, not the roads getting there!). Same goes for "get a taxi to the station" - not only does it double the number of legs on which something might not turn up but also then leads to the "well we might as well get it all the way" - after all if you're going off for a week, £80 compares fairly with the cost of airport parking. From you post mentioning the £80+ taxi - I assume that's to the airport, rather than to Harlow to pick up that local bus service, which would presumably be a lot cheaper, but more of a faff.It would help balance the fact that local buses run from the airport to Bishops Stortford and Harlow while coaches run to a variety of destinations across North London all night. Those of us in the middle get nothing but an £80+ taxi!
GWR already does this between London and Reading. And honestly i believe that vast majority of 4 tracked lines could get 24 hour service. Lets start by running GWR 24/7 to Oxford, West Coast Mainline stoppers to Milton Keynes, East Anglia line to Shenfield (Greater Anglia not Elizabeth Line). What routes do you think could benefit from and relatively realistically justify trains running 24 hours per day? I’m not talking about the daytime timetable continuing throughout the night, but just possibly a service in each direction running at least every 2 hours. For this to work you’d probably need at least 2 routes (or 1 route with 4 tracks) between the origin and destination to allow for overnight engineering works, as well as sizeable settlements or airports to be linked to justify traffic.
I’ll start:
Glasgow-Edinburgh
London-Birmingham
London-Manchester (possibly continuing to the airport)
Stansted Airport-London Liverpool Street
What other routes do you think could work?
Not far from here, trains to Hertford North used to be 24hr, hourly at night like Night Thameslink is for example.Liverpool St - Tottenham Hale (24h Vic line Fri/Sat helps this) - Cheshunt - Harlow - BS - Stansted - Cambridge S / C (- Ely)
They ran STP this weekend but do not appear in the planners ongoing - anyone know why? Going to be hard to attract custom if no one gets offered them when planning a journey!Greater Anglia have announced that they are trialling overnight services on Friday nights to Stansted Airport over the summer![]()
As well as coaches, lots of bus routes run to Stansted through the night, especially from Essex, so airport shift workers in lots of towns are able to get there already. e.g. Bishop's Stortford, Harlow, Colchester, Chelmsford, Southend.I think that massively ignores key potential markets, such as staff commuting which ought to be bread and butter trade for the railway. I'm sure that few people would consider commuting via coach. The existing railway services are already busy to Stansted with staff, so it's not hard to imagine that there could be further untapped demand in the small hours that may be suitable for some airport shift workers. Stansted is also a very different airport to Gatwick.
