I’m on board the Cardiff > Holyhead service and there’s no chef. There are (understandably) upset passengers who were hoping for a meal and haven’t brought anything. Luckily there’s one vegetarian option available – just as well I like quiche. I only paid £55 for my ticket to Llandudno from Newport so don’t begrudge it as it’s a long journey, but it’s still not a great experience given RTT shows 1st has dining etc

Thank you for the explanation. Surely they need to remove the Swansea working from the timetable if its impossible for it to run due to the constraints at Canton when both sets arrive close together. I think its more annoying they keep putting Swansea in the LTP timetable when there is 0 chance of it running.
Agreed; and the same should apply to things like non-gangwayed stock (eg. TfW FLIRTs and GWR 80x), and new fleet transition periods*. Indeed, even if there is a slim chance that a TOC will actually be able to run a through service they advertise, I think it would be better to advertise that a change of train is required so it's a nice bonus for passengers if it does actually run through on the day.

* For example, rather than advertising through trains between Aberystwyth and Birmingham; if passengers are going to need to change between 158 and 197s at Shrewsbury during the transition (details remain unconfirmed) then I think TfW should advertise this as being the planned service for a timetable period. Much better to let passengers know what to expect in advance, if possible, them force an unexpected change on them on the day in my view.

I agree. It would save on fuel as well but im guessing the costs of setting up a depot at Landore (I know TFW do use Landore but more as a storage facility for Sprinters and 197s that are either withdrawn or broken) far outweigh the hassle of amending the Swansea service on a weekday. its a shame the MK4 cannot just stable overnight at Swansea station given it would arrive there just before 9pm and be out again around 9 hours later. But i dont think it has the fuel capacity to do that.
The Swansea issue seems so easy to solve from the armchair. Could 1V50 not just overnight at Swansea? Refuel at Llandore? Save two ECSs and avoid Canton congestion.
The 'route card' threads elsewhere on this forum suggest that TfW don't have any drivers or guards based at Swansea, or I would strongly agree. Another example of the 'silos' created by franchising (and seemingly continued by devolution despite the fact that the UK Government have started 'renationalising' the railway) making a mess of things, rather than just having everyone work for 'BR'? Mind you, similar problems exist even within TfW; eg. only Machynlleth and Pwllheli crews 'sign' the Cambrian lines, meaning TfW apparently had to pay for a taxi to get staff to Shrewsbury when they were running a 06:30 Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth.

As for Landore depot specifically, my understanding is that it is now run by a third-party company that does overhaul/refurb work and 'warm storage' of rolling stock, so presumably another cost to TfW every time they use them. If I've ever been told whether that private company actually purchased Landore when GWR vacated it, or are just leasing, I'm afraid I've forgotten the answer.

Tongue in cheek, perhaps TfW should publish a list of locations where it routinely has set swaps on advertised through journeys? It’s quite a list.

Following a slight change of plans I now have a first class ticket for 1V62 on Tuesday, replacing a standard on 1V62 on Wednesday. Northbound tomorrow is the usual 1W11.

There do not seem to be any reports of failures on here, so hopefully that is a good sign for tomorrow morning.

Cannot remember whether I posted this about 1W11 last week. Any explanation of what is going on there? It was either HD05 or HD06 (that was the pair I had last week anyway)

Ouch. Dim Diolch. I’m on 1W55 (0853 from Cardiff), hoping the heat doesn’t affect them too much
Right now (about to depart Cardiff) it’s like an icebox. Genuinely cold, not just cool. Colder than the 800 I caught here, and the aircon on that was thrashing away.

It was comfortable enough on 1W11. A couple of images here, starting with an alternative take on the platform information screen counting failure:

I like 1W11 for its quietness on the southern part of the journey.

It always amuses me to see the remnants of the old smoking section still running around.

No MK4’s tomorrow & Thursday
Due to reduced timetable
Because of extreme weather conditions
Damn, I was planning to be on 1V39, the 1030 from Manchester. I thought they were performing very well yesterday, and minimal delays today. What’s changed? Are the 150s coming out instead?

They're running today and keeping to time but the AC in the MKIVs is struggling to keep up. There's also no AC at all in the 67s. It's been a struggle today and it's only going to be warmer over the next couple of days.

Yes I checked RTT and they all seemed to have run to time today (or within 20 minutes). The Mk4 set I took north on Monday was ice cold! I don’t really have any choice in my travel tomorrow. Suggestions for minimal disruption/heat welcomed (Sheffield to Swansea, open ticket)

Presumably it’s pretty miserable for the drivers then.

1V62 was ok this evening, but no catering. They did give us some water so that was a nice gesture.

There are a lot of times when it feels like more could be done to keep the service running, but no one should be working without any air conditioning in temperatures like we are currently experiencing. I am grateful to whoever was driving 1V62 as that was loco leading heading south.

Currently on board 1W63, 16 55 CDF-MAN with 67 017 propelling set HD 06 (DVT 82227). All going well so far (touch wood!), but the thought has just occurred to me to ask why the 40 mph permanent speed restriction for loco-hauled trains is still in force over the road underbridge just North of Craven Arms. It must be about two years since the bridge was renewed.

I don't recall the bridge getting renewed? If it was it wasn't a big project. From what I've been told the bridge is in pretty awful condition and NR were adamant there was no chance of allowing higher speeds for non MU trains over it.
