Just received an email from Thameslink about the St Pancras lift refurbs booked in from 15 June until mid-September 2026.

In the email, it states:

While the work is taking place, if you need lift access to or from the Thameslink platforms and cannot use escalators or stairs, you will still be able to access St Pancras International station but will need to use an alternative nearby station with step-free access as part of your journey.

What on Earth do they mean?

I think you’re making un-necessarily heavy weather of this. All trains at St P Thameslink also call at Farringdon. Step free interchange with LUL Circle/ Hammersmith/ Met back to King’s Cross St Pancras. Step free interchange back up to all parts of St Pancras (and vice versa).

Yep, if you need to go specifically to St Pancras (e.g. need to connect between EMR and Thameslink), you should use TfL services another station, like Farringdon, to do that step-free

Which immediately poses the question - why on earth doesn't the email list those step free alternatives? It's not as if the alternative is too complex to describe in words.

I think that lazy email is appalling. Dumping the problem onto the passenger who has already been severely inconvenienced by the up escalators being dead for months.

This is "Artificial Intelligence" writing it. Which has an initial go but some are then too lazy to edit it and just pump it out as is.

I'd expect the quoted section is immediately followed by a direction to check their website for all the alternative routes they have listed, which vary depending on the journey being made

I suspect not as AI would have done a better job.
Humans have a tendency to start writing a sentence assuming the reader has the same context and knowledge that they do and that everyone is reading it having started in mentally the same place as them - and so they end up writing things like this that don't make sense to those who do not. AI doesn't tend to.

Though as OneOfThe48 says, if it is accompanied by "click here to find out more" then it probably works fine. It is hardly gold standard communication either way, though.

The availability of step-free access at other stations on Thameslink is one thing. The perplexing thing about the quoted email is "you will still be able to access St Pancras International station". What does that mean?

Agreed, the information isn't passenger friendly, especially if you're not a frequent user of St Pancras Thameslink.

But poor communication from the railway isn't new and seems to be getting worse...

I can get off the train but cannot access other parts of the station? So just stuck on the platform until the lifts come back?

Well, you can still change trains there, as the train to platforms are step free.

Although... must those trains be in the same direction? As there are lifts to the intermediate landings. And a lift from there to the surface.

So maybe it wasn't coherent.

The lifts serving the Thameslink platforms at St Pancras International are currently out of service while we refurbish them. This will be going on until XX/XX/2026.

While this is taking place, St Pancras International will have no step free access from Thameslink. The rest of the station will be operating as usual.

If you require step free access to/from Thameslink services at St Pancras International, we recommend changing trains at Farringdon, where there is step free interchange between Thameslink and the London Underground, and taking the Metropolitan/Circle/Hammersmith and City line one stop to Kings Cross St Pancras, which has step free access from the train to the street, the Piccadilly, Northern, and Victoria lines, and other National and International Rail services.

As an aside, it's a shame that the Thameslink platforms are so cut off from the rest of the station, with just one entrance and no connection to the Underground, unlike the old Kings Cross Thameslink station.

Considering an underground passageway connects the Underground northern ticket office directly to STP, it's a shame that it wasn't possible to continue this to the Thameslink platforms.

There really should be more than one entrance/exit to the platforms. It gets really difficult when any of the escalators or lifts are out of action.

“Wasn’t possible” being the key words. The interchange subway runs in a trench constructed from outside the King’s Cross train shed to outside the St Pancras approach viaduct, i.e. not interfering with critical historic structures.

Re there should be more than entrance/exit to the platforms, there are actually fire escape routes by staircases towards both ends of both platforms, which access the street. However, not used for public use, except in an emergency.
