The West Popley 5 is being reduced from every 15 mins to every 20 mins from 11th January. It’ll be interesting to see if the split 6 also sees a similar reduction to East Popley (6) and Winklebury (9).

Source: https://bustimes.org/registrations/PH0005857/192

Had a brief look at the new Basingstoke timetables on the Stagecoach site - first things that jump out are:

Winkebury 9 frequency down to 20 mins
Popley 6 frequency up to 12 mins
Interworking between routes 7 & 8
Popley 5 timings cut down
Route 20 appears to be standalone

Aldershot's recently withdrawn Trident 18081 (WA04CTX) has been preserved by, I assume, an association within the Bromley Bus Preservation Group.

https://www.facebook.com/story.php?...757296&mibextid=wwXIfr&rdid=C7M5VNr0jbgAPGj2#
Well the time has come for me to announce the latest arrival.

18081, WA04CTX Joins the ALX400 Preservation Collection. New to Devon in 2004 [...] Later moved down south to various garages such as Chichester, Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Guildford and Andover before ending up at Aldershot where it was withdrawn and we snapped it up for Preservation. Now only a small handful of that batch left with one of her sister vehicles 18071 with The Midlands Bus Preservation.

We have got a few things to do on this to ensure many years of preservation for this old girl and before hitting the rally scenes.

We had our eyes on this one for many years for no particular reason other then being told its a very good bus! Which has been proven. [...] Our good driver friend at Stagecoach who kept us informed of progress on the bus and told us straight away when it came off service. (They know who they are)

I found the late 1990s service fascinating (especially the very heavily inter-worked setups from 1998-2000) so the 2000 reorg and mainly standalone routes was a big change. The only time I’ve seen something similar since was during the pandemic when 1/3/8 worked together. Mind you, there is still the 10/15/17 arrangement today.
If you want a lot of interworking it appears that Stagecoach in Winchester is the place to go. Many of the routes terminating at the bus station, even the high frequency city routes, appear to interwork. Some repeating patterns (the 6 and 66 for example, and one 3 an hour does the 4) but not completely consistent.

I've noticed Winchester, way back to the Stagecoach Hampshire Bus days of the early 90s when the city routes were still numbered in the 20s, has always featured heavy interworking.

I’ve spotted that (due to modern things like BusTimes!) and also Guildford seems to have a few old fashioned ways about it as well - or at least it did a while ago. I haven’t checked recently.

I know I’ve posted in the quirky routes thread about this, but for anyone just seeing this thread about Basingstoke….

New timetable, 5, 9 and 14 interworked. Quite a pleasing change. 7s and 8s interworked which kills two birds with one stone on the Railway Station loop mileage as well as giving a greater rounder time on the 8 for reliability. Not bad at all. Short routes 6s and 20s standalone. Must be zzzz for drivers.

I don’t advocate interworked routes and route deviations purely for the sake of it but I have seen times before when schedules were less rigid and certain local requirements could be accommodated. For example Sherborne village used to have a regular service, if there wasn’t a 45 on the scene, a peak hour trip could become a 51 (vice main route 50) to/from Baughurst to cover the gap.

Another example in Basingstoke was the peak hour 42/44 combos which gave a 15 minute service from town to Lychpit in the evening peak (imagine that now) and giving extras on the 44 from Chineham Business Park (via Wade Road) for the industrial areas on the way back. It was an example of very proactive scheduling, there’s countless other examples but the rigid ‘one route’ approach and set timings doesn’t lean itself towards tailoring things and providing a more inviting service.

I still think that such an approach could work today, there’s numerous black holes in the network in Basingstoke, the main ones for me are Lychpit (2 hour service during the day but 30 minutes in the evenings - granted the vaguities of HCC funding have a part to play), Marnell Park (the long winded 4) and Rooksdown (with a direct bus to town only hourly on the 32). I don’t think more dynamic planning to address issues like this will appear even in a generous medium term, but it’s the knowledge of previous ways that gives me the viewpoint I’ve got.

Anyhow, looking forward to seeing the effect of the recent changes and which tweaks will come up in consequence, in Blazingsmoke (!), they’re never far away : )

Less since the last change, which I think was September.

For a couple of years before that you used to get some occasional interworkings between the Godalming and Cranleigh corridors, which was quite interesting given Cranleigh was Arriva until recently and even way back in NBC Alder Valley days, the two corridors were run out of different depots.

Looks like vehicles mostly stay inside service groups now, though there is still some interworking within a service group where timings dictate that (the 71 and 72, IIRC).

Volvo BZL 66123 (BU75 WSL), part of a batch for the Dover Fastrack, has been photographed at Dover depot. It is in the Fastrack livery but without fleet names.

Photo here on Flickr, by user ‘Who Could I Be?’

I’m trying to work out if these are the first permanent electric buses in east Kent, and they probably are. They will certainly the be the first permanent electric vehicles for Stagecoach South East (they once had an ADL E200EV on hire, for trials on the Canterbury Park & Ride).

More news from the Dover area.

Less than three months after its introduction the service 92 timetable is being revised and reduced from 9th February. Instead of the present ten journeys each way there will only be eight departures from Whitfield and seven from Aylesham from where the last bus is at 17.02 instead of 18.05 although the last bus from Whitfield is later at 18.01 instead of 17.39.
On a brighter note it has been confirmed that the new electric buses will be introduced on Fastrack D from 23rd February with a launch event being held at Pencester Road on 22nd.

I think this may be related to a temporary road closure in Elvington causing a diversion, not a permanent thing. I might be wrong though, who knows at this point!

Yes, you are correct. I shall attempt to poke those responsible to update the website today!

Marking the launch of Dover Fastrack EV, Stagecoach South East is hosting an event at Pencester Road Bus Station on Sunday 22 February between 11am and 3pm.

Drop by to take a look around the new buses, find out more about the new cleaner, greener, comfier fleet. There will be an Electricity of Science workshop from Wild Science for the little ones (and big kids), plus some Stagecoach goodies, so you can grab a sweet treat on them while you walk around.

Buses in service from Monday 23rd.

Aldershot depot’s route 1 (Aldershot - North Camp - Farnborough - Frimley - Camberley) will be on diversion between Aldershot and North Camp from 3rd May until further notice. This is due to the new Yutong deckers being too heavy for the bridge over the Basingstoke Canal. This is explained in a letter from the company to a councillor.

Dear Keith

You may be aware that our Service 1, which operates between Camberley, Farnborough and Aldershot, is scheduled to receive new electric double-deck buses from May 2026.

The service currently operates via Queen's Avenue in North Camp, crossing a canal bridge owned by the Ministry of Defence. This bridge is currently signed to a maximum gross weight limit of 17 or 18 tonnes (depending on direction of travel), which is suitable for the existing diesel buses.

However, the new electric buses are slightly heavier, with a maximum gross weight of 19.2 tonnes when at full capacity. Since last year, we have been working closely with Hampshire County Council (HCC) and the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) —the Ministry of Defence's body responsible for managing and maintaining infrastructure-to identify a solution that would allow continued use of the bridge.

We understand that strengthening works may have been carried out on the bridge in the 1990s, and that the current signed weight restrictions may pre-date these improvements.
However, this has not yet been formally confirmed. If no evidence of strengthening can be established, HCC is expected to undertake a full structural assessment to determine the bridge's true weight capacity.

In the meantime, it will be necessary to divert Service 1 from Sunday 3 May 2026, when the new buses enter service. In the northbound direction, buses will divert from Queen's Avenue via Alison's Road, the A325 Farnborough Road, and Lynchford Road, before rejoining the normal route at Alexandra Road. The same diversion will apply in the southbound direction.

This change is required avoids passage across the canal bridge on Queen's Avenue.

As a result, the following stops will not be served during this period: St Andrew's Church, Prince's Avenue, Hammersley Road, and Napier Gardens. Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide an alternative service to these stops at this time. We will ensure that clear and timely information is displayed at all affected bus stops.

We hope to reinstate the normal route for Service 1 at the earliest opportunity, subject to confirmation that the bridge can safely accommodate vehicles with a gross weight of 19.2 tonnes.

Stagecoach will be publishing information to customers over the coming weeks to explain the change or route and reasons behind our decision. I wanted to ensure you were fully informed of this situation in advance of these notices.

If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely

This may have been discussed before, so apologies if I am going over old ground, but one of the electric vehicles working the Guildford-Camberley 34 passed me today, although I have only ridden on one of them, 74006 (LJ68 CZF), and I found the ride quality very rough compared to the usual vehicles on the route. I put it down to the batteries making it a heavier vehicle, but every pot hole and road defect seemed to be accentuated making the ride uncomfortable at times. Wasn't impressed!

Agreed re the poor ride quality. Back when they used to be the main choice of vehicle on the 715 between Guildford and Kingston, the bumpy road between Cobham and Esher was always an experience, with lots of shaking, rattling and an unknown beeping sound every time the bus hit a particularly rough spot in the road!

Kent County Council route 11 (Canterbury-Westwood) is incredibly using two buses and drivers for each of its 4 journeys a day! At first I thought it was tracking error.
This is due to a road closure between Wingham and Preston
One vehicle operates Canterbury - Westwood but on diversion via Sturry, Hersden and Grove Ferry until it reaches the normal route at Preston.
The other bus operates the Canterbury-Wingham section via Wickhambreux, Ickham. I’m not sure if this one continues to/from Westwood in service as tracking seems to stop on this bit. I saw this bus laying over in a lay-by between Sandwich and Wingham yesterday.
For a route which is usually very lightly-loaded, I can only presume the council or whoever is digging up the road is paying for this!

Only for this week, but it's part of a longer series of road closures:

Due to various diversions on the 11 route between the dates of 13th - 29th April, please see diversions below:

Preston Lane (near Court Lane) Mon 13th - Fri 17th April 2026.
We will operate normal line of route from Thanet serving upto Court Lane where the bus will do a 3 point turn & head back towards Preston & operate to Canterbury via Grove Ferry, Upstreet, Hersden & Sturry.

To maintain a service for Ickham & Wickambreaux, we will be operating a duplicate 11 route between Canterbury & Wingham. This will mean there will be two 11 route departures from Canterbury depending on where you are heading.

The Street, Ickham Thurs 16th - Fri 17th April 2026.
During this closure, to maintain service to Wickambreaux, the 11 will serve Jubilee Road & Church Road towards Canterbury as the bus can not make the right turn into Nargate Street from Wingham.

The Street, Preston Mon 20th - Wed 22nd April 2026 outside The Half Moon & Seven Stars pub.
During this closure, the diversion for the 11 route will be to operate via the Ash bypass after serving Minster & Monkton, we will serve Preston Hill as far as Court Lane where the bus will turn & operate back towards Wingham operating normal line of route.

Preston Road, Stourmouth Thurs 23rd - Wed 29th April 2026 on the bends after The Rising Sun.
During this closure, the diversion for the 11 will be to operate normal line of route to Minster & Monkton, but rather than using Gore Street to serve Plucks Gutter, the bus will instead operate via Sarre & Grove Ferry (Grove Road), resuming service at The Half Moon & Seven Stars.

This route is an absolute nightmare for closures, planned and unplanned. I believe it's the local water company that likes to dig up the road through Preston and Stourmouth. My impression from my infrequent use of it is that they only worry about covering the school journeys (which can be busy), if the closure is during school holidays or for the contra-flow journeys they just miss out the villages. The locals I've talked to (car drivers, local businesses and the few bus users left) are fed up with it. So I'm pleasantly surprised to read this post, especially as most KCC schools don't restart until Monday. Perhaps the complaints are finally getting through. KCC would have to foot the bill for the extra bus/mileage as it's a supported service; whether they can reclaim from the utility I would not know.

It’s certainly a service people would only use if they had absolutely no other option. Or if they are enthusiasts who like unusual routes!
It certainly gets more than its fair share of disruption.

It has been mentioned on a private Facebook group for the South's Winchester operations that one of Aldershot's Gold-branded buses, 10771 (which has been at Winchester due to accident damage last month), is the next one to go into the repaint shop for the "We've Got You" steel blue livery. It is believed that the rest of the Gold MMCs will have their liveries attended to as the new Yutong electrics enter service.

It really is about time. Six years on from the initial Covid service reductions and they’re still running around advertising a 10 min frequency which hasn’t existed since the pandemic began!

Good to hear, and I hope the interiors are attended to as they are starting to look somewhat tired (cracked leather seats etc). I wonder where their future lies, as I’ve heard a suggestion they could be off to Cumbria. We could really do with retaining some quality vehicles in the south as…

… in some least surprising news, trial steel blue MX08UCE (19335) has been marked for disposal at Basingstoke due to damage. I’m not surprised, it was a bit of a dog when it came to the south, didn’t seem very well when I last travelled on it and hasn’t been out for over a month now. Another Trident 2 is outlived by the dwindling number of Tridents in the South.

From 7th April, Route 5 (Canterbury-Seasalter via Whitstable) will be reduced to a roughly 2 hourly service. Route 5A will be introduced to ensure Seasalter-Whitstable-South Tankerton retains an hourly service. The 5A is the same as the 5 except it avoids Sandpiper Road in Seasalter, staying on the main road.

It’s disappointing to see a reduction, as it is a relatively busy bus route for this type of secondary service (based on simply my observations rather than any detailed analysis!), and any reduction just makes a service less attractive. However some journeys are quiet, and it looks like the busier journeys are retained.

The other development is slight improvements to the X3 - a couple of dead runs from Sittingbourne in the evening will now run in service to Faversham (where they continue dead to Herne Bay depot).

There are various other changes to Herne Bay depot routes, mainly timing changes.

All this is publicly available to see on bustimes.org

Looks like us in the South are benefiting from the recent round of Merseyside tenders, with 10549 (SN16ONR), 10550 (SN16ONS), 10564 (SN16OSZ), 10568 (SN16OTD), 10569 (SN16OTE), 10570 (SN16OTF) all listed for transfer to Stagecoach South.

I wonder if Hastings will ever see new electric busses, all we get are often vehicles transferred down from other areas, given a fresh coat of uninspiring dark blue, I don't mind the colour blue, but couldn't they have gone for a lighter shade?

One thing though i did note, some buses now have information screens telling people what the next stop is, yet some other providers, such as Brighton and Hove have had this for years.

I think that this may now be a PSVAR legal requirement.

Yutong electric 83007 on display in Guildford High St today (Sunday 14/06) this time in the middle of the high street.
Went on board, had a look at the driving position, cameras instead of wing mirrors, 'nearside camera' is actually mounted more in the centre of bus, to the left of centre.
Very friendly & helpful lady driver from Peasmarsh explained that vehicles due in service very soon, just last minute tweaks to charging equipment at Aldershot.
Also that Routes 1 and 20 are 'moneyspinners' both operated from Aldershot depot.

I wonder if Hampshire County Council / MOD & Stagecoach have all come to an agreement then regarding the Basingstoke Canal Bridge on Queens Avenue, which I understand has a weight limit which the Yutongs, when fully loaded exceeds. A solution had been found if the bridge is unsuitable but it means turning off the Queens Avenue and diverting via Alison’s Road, A325 and Lynchford Road before returning to the normal route in Farnbough.

An unintended consequence of the delay with the Yutongs is Trident KX06LYV, which went bang in Basingstoke last month, has received a second hand engine from Devon and has returned back to service. For how much longer with the Yutongs, Leamington & Liverpool MMCs remains to be seen though!

Behind the scenes, the North Camp bridge has been resolved as in actuality its weight listing was wrong and can hold the Yutongs but it took a long amount of time to find out who's responsible for the bridge (the MoD, the developer, Hampshire, Rushmoor or the canal association) and who has the paperwork proving its actual weight, which is 20 tons, given currently road signage listed it 17 tons on one end and 18 tons on the other. The fact the Yutongs continue to be delayed has bargained some time for Stagecoach as now all that needs doing is either permission to get the buses over the bridge in spite of the signage or have them relisted to show the correct weight limit.

Perfect, thanks for the update! It certainly shouldn’t be too long now then.

Hopefully the council are aware of the ever growing dip on the Aldershot approach road side. I work around there and you certainly notice the bump now!
