Great Northern Fleet - 379s introduction

The 379s are a fundamentally decent train and inherently suitable for GN.
Absolutely this, they really are rather lovely trains in many ways and actually ride slightly better over the Fens than 387s - probably due to having less weight as no DC equipment and shoe gear. Of course, this is all relative as Electrostar suspension is firmer than many other types of train (I always think of them as in "Sport" mode).
partly because politicians allowed them to be stored for too long
100% this - the best analogy I have for when people ask why they had so many issues being introduced is "Would you park a car up for 3+ years, outside, in the open elements and expect it to perform as if it's just rolled out of the factory?"

Fortunately, a lot of hard work is going into fixing some of their current eccentricities, and it's bearing good results! But there are noticeable differences between 379s and other classes of the Electrostar family when it comes to MiTrac (the Train Management System), some of which requiring input from Alstom.

Incidentally, can anyone comment as to whether 387s and 379s have the same traction package, or whether there is a difference? I can’t decide if the traction motors sound the same or not, the 387s seem to have a slightly more distinctive whine to them.
For all intents and purposes, the traction packages and motors are essentially identical on the 379 and 387. Software levels are ever so slightly different, but hardware the same. Pretty difficult to tell the difference between a 379 under power and a 387 on AC doing the same thing (other than perhaps the age of components, stage of the overhaul cycles etc).

Updating this weeks move of 012 and 013 from Worksop to HE. Which means there are now no 379 at Worksop.
So 001-010 and 016-029 are all in service with GTR. 011- 015 are at HE but have not yet been in passinger service with GTR and 030 is at Selhurst.

Looks like a shortage of 379s (and possibly 387s) today, 1T15 (8.15 Kings Lynn - Kings Cross) was only a 4 car (379003) and failed at Brookmans Park.

I reckon they still have Greater Anglia interiors and livery. Are they likely to be refurbished in due course?

Presumably they will get the “aurora” works done at some point, however I don’t imagine much else being done. It’s possible they may tinker with the position of first class, although this isn’t something that can be easily done as - unlike other Electrostars - the seats differ.

I seriously hope they don't do much to the lovely 1st class seats on these.

Does this have to do with the issues surrounding splitting and joining them at Cambridge?

Shouldn't do really, it's fundamentally the same process for splitting and attaching across the Electrostar fleet regardless of the version/type of TMS they run on.

I think a bigger issue was the fly-doors being stiff initially, but these have naturally loosened up the more they've been used, and some of the couplers/coupler blocks being a tad uncooperative! If you get chance to observe them out and about now, a lot of the coupler blocks have been either replaced or serviced, which has also made a difference. As an aside, some 379s are now running around with nice new bogies!

I don't belive there has been any change is the statue of 011-015 and 030. They remain yet to be used in service with GTR and the rest 001-010 and 016-029 remain in operation. Welcome any updates. BW David

Been another couple of weeks - not aware that there have been any changes with 012 - 015 and 030 still to see passinger serivce.

As an aside the external condition of some of these units is really quite poor, wonder if there is any plan to address this? BW David

379014 and 030 are both together on an outside road at Hornsey, and don’t seem to have seen or be seeing any activity. There doesn’t seem to be any rush to get these into service. Fortunately, reliability and availability seems to have improved now compared to a few months ago. They seem to be turning out 21/25 now.

Doesn’t seem to be any sign of 387101 either.

379s continue to make commuting a massive pain. Currently sat at Cambridge on one that I expect to be cancelled in 5 minutes making me 30 minutes late again.

What actually is the situation with making them fit for purpose? Because they obviously aren't now, and from the announcements they give the drivers certainly think so.

Oh for the 387s back. <(

7101 is at Hornsey.
It has some more software updates and bits to be done on it before it goes out for more network testing.
