Just checking that there has been no movement over the last couple of weeks and its still the case that everything is at HE and in service apart from: -

- 009/011/014 which are at HE but not yet in service
- 012/013/015 which are still at Worksop

And is 030 still at Selhurst?

Thanks

Most likely not unless they drag it dead with a 387. Otherwise, it'd need to be dragged via the NLL, etc., as almost all locos aren't cleared for the Thameslink Core

Unless RTT allocations are wrong, 379011 went down the NCL last night.

It can’t have done - 379s aren’t 3rd rail equipped and don’t have ETCS.

Likely an error in the data that feeds in to RTT

That surely must be a wrong allocation? The NCL is not cleared to most EMUs and also the 379s are AC only while the NCL is third rail.

That wouldn’t have happened.

379009 out of King's Cross to Ely this morning on the 09:24. Is today it's first day back in service?

One curiosity from me - are these are running with the gangway doors open between units when in multiple?

379030 is still in Selhurst on 1 North Siding.
Hasn’t moved or had power in it for some considerable time now. Going to be a long way back for this one I suspect.

379003 appears to have had its First Class compartment declassified. There are no First Class signs on the windows, nor on the doors between the (former?) First Class and Standard Class compartments. The yellow stripe on the outside of the carriage remains and the First Class seating remains in situ. I have not seen this on any other 379 set.

Does any member know if this is a known initiative, or whether it is simply that a passenger has very effectively removed all the First Class decals?

Noted on 1T17 on the up service in the morning, and on 1T54 on the evening down service on 18 March 2026.

I've heard talk of a desire by some to reverse one set on an 8 car 379 so first class will be at the far ends (like a 700) and then that might allow for the same 700 style rear declassification (in direction of travel). However, this then means the accessible sections won't match that of a 387.

It also means they'll still have to keep all 379s branded as first class, but without the ability to show a message onboard (I assume) to say the rear is declassified as I doubt the PIS has such a feature.

Sounds like another shambles in the making, and how would that work for 12-cars?

There is a bit of an issue with the 379s having too much first though.

I never see why operators / builders can’t, on 4-car units, just put first in the ends adjacent to the cabs, like on the 365s. This worked perfectly. The 387s have never really worked well, and the 379s have run into their own issues too.

There is some truth to the suggestion that the position on the 387s is as per what Bonbardier originally envisaged.

In the case of the 700s they should just forget about first, and re-seat the whole fleet to more or less match what is currently first. No one is going to pay for that though, unfortunately.

The PIS doesn't work half the time anyway. Or it does and then when the train is split/joined at Cambridge it gives up working. They still haven't sorted how to split and join in 6 minutes like the 387s. On some occasions, they don't even have someone to split it. So the driver has to shut down the front cab go to the rear make the split. Set the front up again and then carry on with the journey late!

379015 is sitting on its own in Ferme Park with its pan up and has been there at least a week. Anyone know when it came down from Worksop?

Think this is the current state of play with the 379. Amends welcome

Does anyone know what's up with the doors on the 379s? It feels like most trains I've been on recently have had at least some delay due to doors, with some fully cancelled!

Just generally feels like we've got a massive downgrade 387->379.

The suspension on a 379 seems to be less prone to violent lurches than a 387 when going across the fens.

Some of the doors seem to open and close incredibly slowly, and some of the door sounders are massively off-pitch and almost seem to be vibrating/resonating in some weird way (hard to describe but if you hear one, you'll know what I mean).

The 379s are a fundamentally decent train and inherently suitable for GN. As ever, the implementation has been a mess, partly because politicians allowed them to be stored for too long, and partly because no one wants to pay to have the trains reconfigured to alter them from an airport express spec to an outer suburban one. For the end user, this manifests itself in poor availability / reliability (thankfully seems to be improving now, but in their early days it was atticious) and niggles like too much first class, lots of broken window locks (not sure why this should be the case, 387s generally don’t have this issue), etc etc.

What is slightly ironic is that the 387 is essentially the superior train, simply as it’s a later generation of Electrostar (and the 387 build quality does see noticeably better), yet is being somewhat relegated to stopping work as a rump fleet.

Incidentally, can anyone comment as to whether 387s and 379s have the same traction package, or whether there is a difference? I can’t decide if the traction motors sound the same or not, the 387s seem to have a slightly more distinctive whine to them.

Mostly due to the third rail shoe being available so it can be used on more of the Southern network.

I can't confirm but I can speculate that it may be an age thing. The 720s seem to have gotten lower-pitch over time, but I may just be imagining that!!

I think that the 379s will in about 1 year will be at least ahead of the 700s in terms of reliability. Maybe even getting closer to the 387s. Look at what SWT did with the 158s (bringing them up to nearly the same standard as the 159s). Not sure how much difference the daul voltage makes, however it could be less to go wrong. GN have bieng here before when the 365s came north if the river. I took a while before they got to the same failure rates as the ones that were at Hornsey from the beginning.

My crystal ball for 2027 in terms of fleet reliability.
1. 387s (probably significantly underworked)
2. 379
3. 717s (again underworked)
4. 700s (life if hard on Thameslink)
