The March 1985 timetable (probably when the Metro service was its most intensive) shows a daytime service of 18 tph through the core. 6tph on the Green, Yellow and Red lines. The Red line being the Heworth to Benton shorts. Pelaw didn't open until later that year, Yellow and Red line trains...

But what is Sunderland? The 'City of Sunderland' has a population of approx 277,000, but that is the population for the whole Metropolitan Borough, which includes lots of individual towns which are separate from Sunderland itself; e.g. Washington, Houghton-le-Spring, Hetton-le-Hole. The ONS...

But no provision for services north of Newcastle? (I think at the moment they schedule five Newcastle-Edinburgh 'shuttles' per day.) Is that your suggestion to improve service reliability? Or is ditching north of Newcastle a TPE aspiration?

It's not only RTT which doesn't show it as a through service, no timetable shows it as a through service. If you look up, say, a Haltwhistle to Dumfries journey at around 7am, you're told you need change at Carlisle. In the reverse direction, the 16:13 is shown as a through service from...

But only in that direction! (There is no longer a through train from Newcastle to Glasgow via Carlisle and Dumfries.)
