Interesting point by Envoy about time zones. On many occasions on advance tickets it is the same price for 3/4 trains yet you have to pick one and hope for no delays to catch them.

There is a S11 that leaves the airport direct to Koln Messe/Deutz which is easier than going to the airport railway station. Cash only however from the ticket machine on the platform. The Koln card I found good value when in Koln itself.
