Isn't the basic bottom line the fact that SVH can only be purchased in combination with a Virgin Advance fare? (in the opposite direction for the same point-to-point journey)

The WDT-PAD example is indeed a little odd since before 2010 the fares were in line with LU fares. Since the introduction of PAYG oyster on NR the fares were frozen in line with LU fares, whereas a journey from LST (underground) to ECR (National Rail) falls under the new fares regime which...
And if you manage to get a Y-P railcard discount loaded onto it and don't travel before 0930 it rounds down to even less, £3.30 ish - the cap for z2-6, even if you're only travelling on buses.

That's very illuminating. West Drayton was one of the first set of stations to start accepting oyster PAYG, and they didn't change the web-form when West Drayton entered Oyster PAYG, I assumed they would include it at a later date, but it's still not there. Clearly it's in the database somewhere...
Thanks for that explanation, it sounds quite plausible.
Unfortunately the Web-form doesn't work for that Journey, apparently TfL don't recognise West Drayton as a destination as it's not included in the list of stations to pick from. Back on-hold on the phone tomorrow then!
