I think when they had assumed from previous experiences of trains being cancelled (which involved more wider disruption) that they didn’t need to rush to the station, could stay for dinner, and had the flexibility to take any later service.

Did they definitely say Elizabeth line? All the times I have been on the EL, the announcement says “this is the train to Abbey Wood via Canary Wharf” no mention of Elizabeth line.
The larger ticket machine in the tube ticket hall closest to the National Rail Station at Charing Cross (entrance at the top of Villers St) definitely has them because I used that one the other day after being directed to it by the staff working there.
