I consistently find that there's no coverage at Smethwick Galton Bridge (lower level). On the approach to from either side it just goes to crap. EE & o2, just stop working. Been that way for over ten years.

TFW only guarantee speeds above one megabit. They also had at one point (and I think it's still there) a data cap of about a hundred meg before they restrict your download speeds.

This sounds the most likely explanation. I've been doing this route daily since 2009ish and notice changes. The speed limits on approach doesn't feel the right answer with noticing trains being marshalled in almost like aircraft. I've not seen it before at BHM. It could be the headway thing...

I noticed whilst walking through BHM that the seats in waiting areas are sometimes plugged into the mains. I can't figure out why though? They don't feel heated. I thought perhaps a motorised seat to help less-able-bodied passengers sit down and stand up?
