IIRC by the early 80’s Class 47/4s were used between Carlisle and Stranraer. These could have been from any depot but more likely to be Crewe or Eastfield’s examples.

I’m not 100% sure but I’m assuming it was a cost cutting measure by BR. Both routes via Cudworth and Pontefract suffered from mining subsidence. With the introduction of the Selby diversion there was an opportunity for slightly faster services between York and Sheffield via Doncaster.
