    ECML Diversion Routes - Lincoln-Spalding-March-Ely between 1976-1980?

You are correct, a very complicated history. Thanks for the clarification.

    ECML Diversion Routes - Lincoln-Spalding-March-Ely between 1976-1980?

Correct me if I am wrong but I wasn’t aware that there was a Stirling-Ely Motorail service. Could it be a parcels or ECS working? If the date is correct, the photo was taken on a Friday; an unusual date for a diversion? Having said that if the date is correct and it isn’t a Motorail service...

What's the furthest away your train has been diverted ad hoc?

Back in the late 90s I was at Kings X waiting to depart for York on the 1500 to Glasgow. Shortly after 1500 an announcement was made stating the train had been cancelled due to overhead line damage. It was then announced that the HST operated 1600 to Aberdeen would run albeit diverted via...

    Stranraer "Boat Train"

IIRC by the early 80’s Class 47/4s were used between Carlisle and Stranraer. These could have been from any depot but more likely to be Crewe or Eastfield’s examples.

Saturday 4th March 1989 My first experience of electric traction out of Leeds. IIRC 89001 hauled a rather scruffy set of Mk11b and c stock. The train was shunt released at Kings Cross before its return to Leeds.. 89001 Leeds-Kings Cross (1000 Leeds-Kings Cross) 89001 Kings Cross-Leeds (1320...

    Back in the day...

Friday 3rd March 1989 Today I travelled to London with a friend for a beer festival, IIRC it was at Olympia. We returned to Kings Cross in time to catch the 1736 to Peterborough. We were expecting it to be 89001. However it turned out to be 91001 being the first time a Class 91 worked a...

Closure of Bransty Tunnel (near Whitehaven) expected until at least spring 2026

I am an occasional user of the Whitehaven-Carlisle route and in my opinion there seems to be a high number of train cancellations due to train crew shortages. Today has been a particularly bad day with several cancellation. It is even more galling when a service train is cancelled, only for it...

Former Intercity CrossCountry routing, rolling stock, stopping pattern variations

I’m not 100% sure but I’m assuming it was a cost cutting measure by BR. Both routes via Cudworth and Pontefract suffered from mining subsidence. With the introduction of the Selby diversion there was an opportunity for slightly faster services between York and Sheffield via Doncaster.

Former Intercity CrossCountry routing, rolling stock, stopping pattern variations

During March 1982 I travelled on my first cross country HST service between Sheffield and York. This service, the 1450 Plymouth-York SuO (43165/6) was routed via Cudworth, Normanton and Castleford. My next three journeys during December 1982 were all routed via Pontefract. I’m not sure when the...

I am also guilty of some of those listed above. In addition I also had 33038 between East & South Croydon (post #5838). Slightly further than Exeter Central to St Davids. It was the only time I had it for haulage.
