I believe more than 70% of passenger KM is on electric trains in the UK, how that compares to other similar countries I'm not sure. Obviously we are reasonably behind in % of the network, but those bits aren't used by many people

What is the logic behind being able to cancel a red signal warning? Shouldn't passing a red signal automatically apply the brakes regardless of the driver's actions? I know there are situations where drivers are instructed to pass red signals but it's always puzzled me

Yes I accidentally missed out that the idea would be to do this all on your phone, and, speculating, it could even be done automatically via the app once it knows you are in/near the station

I did see a confidential report some years ago around ticketing. One of the suggestions was that people would buy a ticket and then check in at the station and be allocated a seat on the next available train

It would be far better if the gate lines were at the north, south and east exits, making the entire concourse the paid area - the mezzanine would be available for non-ticket holders to cross the station. Then it wouldn't matter which exit you used, and it could have huge numbers next to the...

To a certain extent clearly, but for a lot of people public transport is a distress purchase, they only use it if they have to. This doesn't include anyone on this forum, but it really is a thing.

Because London. Fundamentally there is no alternative to train travel into Central London, and the the volumes of people doing so dwarf everywhere else in the country. People quite happily drive into other city centres around the country. There's nothing more to it than that
