Birmingham New Street the worst UK station?

It would be far better if the gate lines were at the north, south and east exits, making the entire concourse the paid area - the mezzanine would be available for non-ticket holders to cross the station. Then it wouldn't matter which exit you used, and it could have huge numbers next to the...

Potential solutions for earth shifting after dry weather?

The OHLE masts can also move - north of Ely has a history of doing so if I'm not mistaken

TfW class 398 Stadler Citylink tram trains

That forum member made some unbelievably outlandish claims, completely destroying any credibility. These units seem to be being introduced carefully, which given the recent history of new trains seems entirely sensible. Take a look at the 810 thread if you want a real horror story

Major new railways in Europe with construction visible on Google earth/maps?

Brescia-Verona-Vicenza, and various sections between Naples and Foggia are clearly visible

Cambridge South : no parking (and local CCTV is dissuade anyone from stopping near by...)

A simple web search tells me that the station has a pickup/drop-off area

The cost of living agenda - how should the railway contribute ?

To a certain extent clearly, but for a lot of people public transport is a distress purchase, they only use it if they have to. This doesn't include anyone on this forum, but it really is a thing.

The cost of living agenda - how should the railway contribute ?

Because London. Fundamentally there is no alternative to train travel into Central London, and the the volumes of people doing so dwarf everywhere else in the country. People quite happily drive into other city centres around the country. There's nothing more to it than that

Unpopular opinion: IETs are perfectly fine, for the most part.

They (GWR IETs) are the only train that I have ever heard set off a big discussion across the office about, specifically the seating. I have barely heard trains mentioned at any other time, apart from "my train was late" or whatever. Obviously anecdotal, but I have also overheard plenty of...

GWR two passengers left behind at Paddington

What does a first class passenger look like?

    HS2 Old Oak Common

It really isn't, the first GWML blockade isn't until 2029, there's no chance of it being functional before 2031. It's possible everything will be finished bar the actual tracks before then

2024 Tube Stock (Siemens Inspiro London)

Presumably TfL don't have any in-house architects/civil engineering any more so they have to use a consultant? Calling it a feasibility study when it's going to produce an actual design seems a bit inappropriate

Quadruple track for Ireland, Dublin Connolly to Malahide

It isn't, it's adding an extra pair of tracks between two points. Tunnelling is almost certainly going to be considered. Lots of the route looks extremely tight to fit more tracks on the surface, let alone the space to build them next to a working railway

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

Aerospace is heavy industry? Literally bollocks

Why should I trust rail travel?

Do you ever think that maybe being so judgemental might influence how people treat you?

Reopenings - the positive narrative the railway industry needs !

If transport is a major driver of development, why is Newcastle, with it's metro network, not outperforming Bristol, with it's pitiful transport infrastructure? I would suggest the North-East's peripheral location is a much bigger factor than the quality or otherwise of it's transport network

Why should I trust rail travel?

Do you expect people in every industry to be enthusiasts about that industry? And if not why would rail be any different?

    Electrification changes near Slough

I just noticed a number of new pilings and masts between Slough and Langley, on the south side. Anyone know why anything would need to be changed around there?

Standard gauge trains in Russian gauge land, and platform-train interface

Don't most (all?) stations have incredibly low platforms anyway? So the question is moot

TfW class 398 Stadler Citylink tram trains

How about this one? There's been loads of drivel posted. The wrong type of OHLE. Nearly all the TAM lines are permanently earthed rather than live. Etc. etc.
