Thanks, as far as I remember the bridge - local nickname “hemelbed”, four poster bed - opens every hour, ~ on the hour, on demand. Did you take any photos of the ship(s) passing? Inland barges should be able to pass anyway.

I have been on all three of them, plus Spiekeroog before it was closed down. The Wangerooge one is the most spectacular by far, it will not run when the there’s to much water at HW - this once happened to us o_O
it connects the village - Borkummers call it “Stadt” - with the pier. & on the mainland the ferry connects to the train, both in
NL (Eemshaven) & in DE (Emden). So that’s a truly international rail-ferry-rail connection.
The Hoek van Holland-Harwich ferry doesn’t count anymore, on the Dutch...
