    I don't know for sure, but how far in advance are you renewing? Perhaps if it's too far it won't let you have too much of an overlap as the validity might only be 3 years and a couple of days to allow for postage.

    Discounted fares may now be rounded up; but not sure if this has always been the case? I don't think I've topped up by anything other than a round number of pounds.

    I was going to say, otherwise I think you can (just about) do Macclesfield to Holyhead single for £6.00 on the bus (but 10hrs); or £54.30 (3.5hrs) if everything clicks.
