All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

In general, privatisations were not done with sufficient controls over those taking on the services. The lack of resilience may be a consequence of running at minimum cost, knowing there would never be any serious consequences.

All cross country services suspended 23/08/26

Living in Nuneaton, most of my rail trips require the use of XC trains even though I do my best to avoid them. I had to drive to Ambergate yesterday.

Should there be discretion on Delay Repay thresholds?

Thresholds should be set so that the delay repay is based on the actual customer experience and not some slightly different technical timing. Allowing an extra minute or possibly two to the measured timings is just good customer service.

Lumo running train with no toilets

I think it is likely that a significant proportion of passengers who require regular or urgent access to toilets also need assistance boarding. For these passengers, stopping for toilet breaks may not be easy. Ramps may need to be provided to leave and re-board the train. The station...

Trains all at a stand in the Manchester area... (Thursday afternoon 06AUG2026)

Is there not a backup location for the Manchester ROC? I seem to remember there was a secondary site for the Birmingham ROC

    TPE reservations.

I'm currently travelling on a TPE 185 between Stockport and Doncaster. I have a reserved seat booked through the forum using the seat picker. There are no reservation displays on the 185, and no reservation cards have been put on the seats. Is this normal, or just a one-off?

    Railcard Overlap

As around 90% of 16 and 17-year-olds are still in education, why should they pay the adult fare at all? The situation is better than in my youth, when adult fares started at 14. Even then it was a hangover from earlier years, as by then everyone was in education until 16. Would it be...

    Railcard Overlap

Why are there both 16-17 and 16-25 railcards? As the 16-17 railcard has a larger discount, why would any 16 or 17 year old buy a 16-25 railcard? This seems to lead to accidental or in some cases, deliberate selection of the wrong railcard as evidenced in disputes and prosecutions. Should the...

Driving technique: Does it really impact fuel usage?

I was told years ago that the pedal in my car that uses the most fuel is the brake. Logically, this is true, but planning ahead is required. If you use the brake more, then you have put excess energy into the system. Coasting is better where possible, provided that the required timings...

“Buy before you board” - policy where ticket buying facilities are a long way away from the train

I suspect ticket machines are placed where it is easiest and cheapest to provide power and network connectivity rather than in the most sensible and obvious place for passengers.

“Buy before you board” - policy where ticket buying facilities are a long way away from the train

Why is signage for TVMs at the station entrance not a mandatory requirement? On most stations, they are easily found, but there have been a number of posts on here where passengers haven't found them or, in some cases, haven't recognised them as being ticket machines.

Travel advice to/from London St Pancras - 19/06/26 to 28/06/26

I am travelling northbound from Leicester early tomorrow. All the trains seem to originate from Bedford; are these likely to be cancelled?

    Where am I?

Closest so far, It is Dinas, a through station on the WHR, formerly Dinas Junction, terminus of the WHR/NWNGR and through station on the LNWR. This has been dragging on for too long, so over to Richard1976 for the next one...

No, think smaller, and not in England.
